Feels like none of these drivers have any awareness.

What Shapiro is expressing is called cultural racism, which became prominent when crass biological racism was discredited. The problem is, let’s say you find a Muslim who eats pork, drinks, and in fact insists they’ve converted to Christianity. You will not actually accept them as a full person with full rights. Their acceptability will always hinge on their behaving like “one of the good ones,” on always being subservient to you, you who have the power to define who can belong. The second they step out of line or express independent ideas, you’ll say, “see, you can take the tiger out of the jungle…”
