@hayeytan@ForeignPolicy As a Turkish Jew, you should be advocating for calm and understanding. Instead, you seem to deepen tensions between Turks and Jews. The US, Europe, and Turkey all have an interest in a stable Syria—so why not question Israel’s desire for a fragmented and destabilized Syria?
My read on the SDF's dissolution: it ends Turkey's counterterrorism rationale in Syria. Yet Turkish troops will remain, with a new objective — keeping Sharaa in power. In Iraq, by contrast, without the PKK threat Ankara may find it harder to justify its military presence. 👉

New piece: the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement is not a "Muslim NATO." There is no common enemy, no binding text, no appetite to fight.
Besides, reading it as a hedge against an unreliable US may only fit Saudi Arabia, not Turkey and Pakistan. President Trump has welcomed the pact, a sign Washington doesn't see it as a hedge against its waning interest.
The agreement is politically useful precisely because it allows three states with different strategic interests to signal unity without creating a mechanism that forces them into a war. Its importance could increase if American disengagement leaves a growing security vacuum.👉👉👉
One option for the northern Gulf states is to pursue more costly westward routes, building new pipelines and expanding the capacity of existing ones in order to bypass the strait. For Iraq in particular, the only remaining avenue lies to the west, toward the Mediterranean.
An initiative for Iraq is the Syrian route. On July 18, in Washington, the Syrian Petroleum Company and Iraq's Basra Oil Company signed a memorandum on the rehabilitation of the Haditha-Baniyas pipeline, a component of the Kirkuk-Baniyas corridor that opened in 1952 and fell out of service after 2003.
The stated initial capacity is approximately 2 million barrels per day, substantially above what the original line ever carried.
Ankara would previously have objected to a project competing directly with the Kirkuk-Ceyhan pipeline, but it has not done so. Two considerations may account for this acquiescence.
The first concerns Syria. Ankara has heavily invested in the survival of the new authorities in Damascus, whose durability depends on economic recovery. Transit revenue would serve that objective directly while giving Baghdad a material stake in Syrian stability. This may also help reduce Iraqi hostility toward Syrian President al-Sharaa, who served a prison sentence in Iraq for his jihadist activities.
The second consideration is commercial. Turkey is a heavy purchaser of oil rather than a supplier. It imports the overwhelming share of its crude and natural gas, and the price shock has added an estimated $14 billion to its energy bill for 2026, of which roughly $8 billion is attributable to oil and $6 billion to gas. Bayraktar has estimated the sensitivity at approximately $400 million a year for every dollar per barrel.
Any additional volume reaching international markets reduces what Ankara pays, and the anticipation of new capacity exerts downward pressure on prices in advance of any physical delivery.
In my latest article I discuss how the war has split the Gulf between producers with a way around Hormuz and those without, and why Ankara has not objected to the Iraq-Syria pipeline deal competing with its own Kirkuk-Ceyhan line.
The NATO summit held in Ankara on July 7 and 8 produced few surprises. By the standards of the alliance in its current condition, a summit that ends without a scandal counts as a success, and Ankara delivered one.
The summit also marked a high point in Turkish-American relations, one built less on institutions than on the personal chemistry between Donald Trump and Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. That harmony delivered tangible gains for Ankara. It also carries costs that were far less visible amid the glamorous ceremony.
The Ankara summit served Trump's purposes as much as Erdoğan's: the White House repurposed the trip as proof that under Trump's leadership America is once again respected on the world stage, illustrating the claim with a photograph of the two presidents shaking hands beneath the presidential seal at Erdoğan's palace.
Beyond sanctions relief, the summit conferred something the Turkish government has long sought: prestige and normalization at the heart of the Western alliance. It also positioned Turkey advantageously within NATO's structural transformation.
Yet beneath the glamour of the summit lies a darker side. The crackdown on Turkey's opposition has accelerated over the past year, and Western capitals have progressively lowered the volume of their objections.
On the very day the summit convened, Ekrem İmamoğlu, the opposition's leading presidential candidate, imprisoned since March 2025, appeared before judges in yet another trial.
This unqualified Western embrace of Erdoğan is pushing the opposition toward desperation, and toward a risky wager. On the day of the summit, opposition leader Özgür Özel called for Turkey to build stable, institutional relations with Russia and China, and declared that if children were to greet the American president, they should hold photographs of the 165 girls killed in Iran.
Özel certainly knows that political parties in Turkey that anchor their politics in confrontation with Washington face an uphill battle. His rhetoric is unlikely to make his path easier. His stance can be better understood as a desperate search for foreign support wherever it might be found.
The Ankara summit thus served the Turkish government on every level. To the world, it showcased Turkey's growing indispensability within the alliance. To the domestic audience, the imagery of Western leaders gathered in the capital signaled that Erdoğan enjoys their full backing. This makes the Turkish opposition more desperate in its endeavor for survival under heavy pressure. 👇👇👇
