Worried that running will “wear out” your knees?
This is one of the most persistent myths about osteoarthritis (OA).
Here are 7 evidence-based ways to protect your knees & hips.
1️⃣ Keep moving
✅Walking, cycling, swimming and other aerobic activities are good for your joints.
🔸Exercise does NOT “wear out” healthy joints.
✅In fact, regular exercise is one of the best-supported strategies for maintaining joint function and reducing OA-related pain and disability.
2️⃣ Running is NOT necessarily bad for your knees
🔸Recreational runners do not appear to have a higher risk of knee/hip OA than sedentary people.
✅Some studies find lower OA occurrence among recreational runners.
🔸The concern is more relevant to very high-volume/high-intensity running, previous major joint injury and certain individual risk factors.
So:
❌ “Running destroys your knees” is a MYTH
✅Sensible, progressive running is generally fine for healthy joints.
3️⃣ Strength training may be your knee’s best friend
✅Build the muscles around the quadriceps, hamstrings, glutes, calves and hips.
✅Stronger muscles improve joint function and load tolerance.
✅And you don't need a gym; squats, step-ups, lunges, resistance bands and other progressive exercises can work.
4️⃣ Maintain a healthy weight
🔸This is particularly important if you are overweight or obese.
🔴Excess body weight increases mechanical loading on the knee and hip and is an important modifiable risk factor for OA.
✅If you are overweight, weight loss + exercise is a powerful combination.
5️⃣ High-impact vs low-impact exercise: which is better?
🔸There is no single “best” exercise for everyone.
✅Walking, strengthening, neuromuscular exercises and aquatic exercises can all be useful.
🔸Current guidelines do not establish a hierarchy in which one type is universally superior.
✅The best exercise is often the one you can do consistently and progressively.
6️⃣ What about calcium, vitamin D & protein?
✅Adequate protein, calcium and vitamin D are important for overall muscle and bone health.
▶️“Important for bones/muscles” does not mean “prevents osteoarthritis.”
🔸There is no good evidence that routinely taking calcium or vitamin D supplements prevents knee/hip OA in people who are not deficient.
✅Supplement when there is a genuine indication; not simply because you have reached a certain age.
✅Similarly, adequate protein supports muscle maintenance, but protein supplements are not proven OA-prevention drugs.
7️⃣ What if you already have knee pain?
🔸Don't automatically stop exercising.
✅For most people with knee OA, exercise is part of the treatment, not something to fear.
✅Walking, cycling, swimming and strength training can often be modified according to symptoms.
🔸Even people with OA can often continue running, provided the condition is appropriately assessed and running is introduced/continued progressively.
🟠If pain is persistent, swelling is significant, the knee locks/gives way, or symptoms are worsening, you should get assessed.
🚨 5 myths to remember
❌ “Running causes knee arthritis.”
❌ “You should rest if you have knee OA.”
❌ “Only low-impact exercise is safe.”
❌ “Calcium + vitamin D supplements prevent arthritis.”
❌ “Once you have OA, exercise will damage the joint further.”
✅The truth:
Your joints are designed to move. The goal is not to avoid loading your knees and hips. It is to load them appropriately, build strength, maintain a healthy weight and avoid preventable injuries.

@KalyanKBiswal Pasteurised milk should never be taken directly Pasteurisation is done only to increase shelf life of milk It has always to be boiled And even if you boil it you are not getting rid of TB & Leprosy bact You’ll have to boil for 10 mins It is not for India, true for whole world
Hello! Good morning.
I thought I should explain myself on the topic here in detail (because people, especially the ones commenting under your post are looking to be spoon-fed). Your concern is genuine, but your substantiation, irrelevant (you used a personal experience - not sound data)
In these podcasts, I provide the final outcomes of multiple trials I have read on the topic instead of describing one trial at a time - this is boring, time consuming and not laypeople friendly. Still people do not trust doctors with simple explanations (but those with controversial takes only). Thats how social media goes - unfortunately. Ask the real doctor for evidence (why early dinner is a myth), but trust the health-coach fraud without questions (late dinner kills).
Stay with me. This effort is called Brandolini's Bullshit Assymmetry Principle (everyone should read on it).
Yes, there is research on meal timing. No, it does not show what you (or people) claim. Eating late does seem to do a few things to the body in the short term. That part is real. But no study has ever shown that moving dinner earlier makes you healthier in the long term, live longer, age slower, or get sick less. Not one. And no health organisation in the world tells people what time to eat dinner.
One very careful study (Harvard, 2022) fed 16 people the exact same food, controlled their sleep, light and movement, and just changed the timing. Eating late made them hungrier, burned slightly fewer calories, and changed how fat tissue behaved. But it was 16 people for 6 days. It measured body chemistry, not health.
Pooled studies show early eating leads to about 1.8 kg more weight loss over a few months. Small. Short. And probably just because people ate less.
So the whole "Eat your dinner earlier" is based on the above thin foundational evidence base.
A generalized recommendation to have dinner early may not work for everyone due to the work and lifestyle they have. So "forcing this myth" on people will give them "food anxiety" and in general, "make them feel insecure" about their life choices - including work, sleep and eating (which may be healthy in any case around their routine).
Now lets look at the real studies:
The biggest study that compared timed early versus late eating found no difference at all (eat only in the morning-to-afternoon, eat only in the afternoon-to-evening, pick your own 8-hour window, or just follow normal healthy-diet advice) - Camacho-Cardenosa et al 2026
A Japanese study followed nearly 72,000 people for 19 years. Eating dinner after 8 p.m. versus before 8 p.m. made no difference to death from heart disease or stroke. The only thing that mattered was having irregular dinner times. So consistency matters, not earliness - Jingyun Tang et al 2021
A US study of 33,000 adults found the lowest death rate in people who ate across an 11–12 hour window. Squeezing it to 8 hours or less went with 30% higher death rates overall - and more than 50% higher heart deaths in older adults. If anything, the population data warns against squeezing your eating hours too hard and too early - Ziling Mao et al 2025
Nobody has ever tested early vs. late eating for ageing or lifespan in humans. Expert reviews of this field say it outright: there is no data on meal timing and human longevity.
No guideline says anything about dinner time.
The American Heart Association looked at this and concluded there isn't enough evidence to say what the best times to eat are. The American Diabetes Association still doesn't recommend intermittent fasting. A Nordic review found the evidence too weak and inconsistent to base any recommendation on. India's own ICMR-NIN 2024 guidelines have 17 recommendations - none about dinner time.
And finally, my patients are told the opposite.
European liver guidelines tell people with liver disease to eat three meals and three snacks, and call the late-night snack the most important one, because it covers the long gap between dinner and breakfast. American gastroenterology guidelines tell cirrhosis patients to eat something between 7 and 10 p.m. For people with cirrhosis, muscle loss, frailty, or pregnancy, a long overnight fast is harmful.
That said, the short term benefit maybe for those trying to lose weight where eating early stops you eating at night. That's a portion-control trick. Nothing to do with overall well-being or longevity.
So dear friend(s) "Eat and early dinner to be healthy" is nothing, but an "old wives' tale and a "grandma's mythical advice."
Hope this is clear.
@amazonIN & @delhivery they have fled twitter on my problem & they boast customer service. They are neither delivering my order nor allowing me to cancel. One single customer is a trivial matter for them. I have allowed Amzn to keep my money. It’ll enhance their share value.
They are making a mockery of customer service. are asking copy of Aadhaar Card for delivery of a flower pot stand. are not allowing me to cancel order either. are referring to an old e-mail. I have allowed them to cancel order & keep money. It will enhance Amazon share value.
As informed earlier, we request you to check for an email with the subject line 'Your https://t.co/2CANleglm4 Social Media Inquiry' in your inbox/registered email address and reply to it.
Further, followup with our team via email with your insight for assistance in this regard. Appreciate your understanding.

@UIDAI please advise whether you have authorised @amazonIN and @delhivery to submit copy of Aadhaar Card at the time of delivery. They are asking me for delivery of flower pot stand.
@AmazonHelp You don’t need to be concerned about me. Just cancel the order and nothing else. That will be an honour for me otherwise insult. Or you can keep the money also, it will enhance the value of Amazon’s shares.
@amazonIN you have blocked all the channels of contact. I had no other option but to resort to bringing it to social media platforms. @delhivery has got its own policy of delivery which is against the laws of the country.
@amazonIN your delivery partner @delhivery is asking for Aadhaar no and copy of the card. How can it be. I have complained about wrong behaviour of Delhivery earlier also. For all items on sale tell name of delivery partner. If Delhivery is there I’ll never order.
I shall be very happy if you raise a link to cancel the order. I have received enough insult. I shall never order any big item from Amazon because it will be sent by @delhivery. Please cancel cancel cancel the order, no other help I need.
We get your concern. You should have received an email which has the subject line as 'Your https://t.co/2CANleglm4 Social Media Inquiry' here: https://t.co/OcuOSCl6Qk.

@AmazonHelp email says delivery was attempted contact Delivery agent. It is harassment. I don’t want the item now. Send me the link to cancel the order. Your current app is mockery of customer service. If you can’t return the item, keep the money with you. It’ll enhace share value of Amazon
@AmazonHelp My issue remains unresolved. One suggestion, Amazon should also display names of delivery partner also along with product details. If @delhivery is there I shall not purchase the item. This is their third behaviour with me/family. Once they forced me pick item from their godown
