AMSTERDAM BUILT A 600-CAR PARKING GARAGE BENEATH A CANAL.

Designed by ZJA, the Albert Cuyp Garage sits beneath the water of the Boerenwetering canal in Amsterdam’s De Pijp district. Completed in 2018, it was the first parking garage built beneath an Amsterdam canal.

The two-level structure extends for 260 metres (853 feet) and provides 600 car spaces and 60 bicycle spaces. Cars are parked at a 70-degree angle, while matching angled columns create a repeating rhythm through the long, narrow interior.

By moving hundreds of cars below the water, the project allowed more street space to be reclaimed for greenery, public squares, pedestrians and children—without using additional land above ground.
