Solar is scaling at record speed. ☀️
In 2024, global capacity reached 2,205 GW, with 548 GW added in one year, supplying nearly 8% of global electricity.
But the surge is uneven.
Asia-Pacific delivered 71% of new capacity, while the Middle East and Africa contributed just ~1%. LDCs and SIDS together attracted less than 1% of global solar investment.
In Global Solar Trends and Outlook 2025, the International Solar Alliance calls this the “scale era”, but not yet an inclusive one. The priority now is turning record growth into broad-based participation through catalytic finance and regional partnerships.

Solar is not just scaling, it’s decentralising.
By end-2024, small-scale solar reached 926 GW, accounting for 43% of annual additions and attracting USD 288B in investment, surpassing utility-scale flows.
Off-grid solar alone serves over 561 million people, delivering more than half of new electricity connections in sub-Saharan Africa in recent years.
In Global Solar Trends and Outlook 2025, the International Solar Alliance positions decentralised renewable energy as the frontline of a just transition, unlocking access for households, farmers and MSMEs across LDCs, SIDS and Africa.

Solar now represents 22% of global installed capacity, but delivers only ~8% of electricity generation.
The gap? Capacity utilisation, curtailment, and grid constraints. Over 1,500 GW of renewables remain stuck in grid queues worldwide showing the system, not the technology, is now the bottleneck.
In Global Solar Trends and Outlook 2025, the International Solar Alliance argues that the next story is not just more megawatts but more reliable megawatt-hours. Higher CUFs, storage, hybridisation and better grid codes will define bankability and long-term capital flows.

Solar markets are evolving.
What began with subsidies and feed-in tariffs is now shifting toward competitive auctions, market-based pricing and investment-grade frameworks.
Countries like India illustrate this transformation. In FY2024 alone, the country auctioned 59 GW of clean energy, nearly matching the total capacity awarded in the previous four years combined.
In Global Solar Trends and Outlook 2025, the International Solar Alliance highlights that the next phase of solar growth depends on stable procurement frameworks, risk-mitigation mechanisms and access to long-term capital.

Africa holds one of the world’s greatest solar opportunities.
The continent has 40–60% of the world’s highest-quality solar resources, yet accounts for only ~1% of global solar capacity and less than 2% of investment.
At the same time, around 565 million people in Sub-Saharan Africa still lack access to electricity.
In the Global Solar Trends and Outlook 2025 report, the International Solar Alliance highlights how scaling solar across Africa can expand affordable electricity, drive industrialisation and strengthen global energy security through cross-border energy systems.

The global solar supply chain has achieved remarkable scale, but it is also highly concentrated.
Today, one country accounts for 85–95% of global manufacturing across key PV segments, from polysilicon to modules. While this scale has reduced costs, it also raises geopolitical and supply-chain risks.
In Global Solar Trends and Outlook 2025, the International Solar Alliance calls for a more diverse, decentralised and digital solar ecosystem, with stronger manufacturing capabilities, circular-economy practices and new industrial partnerships.

Solar alone is powerful.
Solar with storage is transformational.
Global battery storage reached 164 GW / 370 GWh in 2024, with 82% of new storage deployed for energy shifting moving daytime solar power to evening demand.
Projects combining solar and storage are already delivering reliable peak power at costs approaching or below fossil fuels in several markets.
In Global Solar Trends and Outlook 2025, the International Solar Alliance highlights solar-plus-storage as a cornerstone of future power systems.

Solar technology is advancing rapidly.
Module efficiencies have risen from ~16% to over 22% in a decade, while innovations such as floating solar, agrivoltaics and building-integrated PV are opening entirely new deployment frontiers.
Beyond electricity generation, solar is now powering irrigation, mobility, industry and climate-resilient infrastructure.
In Global Solar Trends and Outlook 2025, the International Solar Alliance emphasises that the next wave of innovation must reach LDCs, SIDS and Africa early to ensure technology drives inclusive development.

@tata_cars I booked a Safari 3 weeks ago in Delhi and for some reasons your dealers don't have or want to share any update on expected delivery of the vehicle. Absolute flip from the over enthusiastic stance while booking. Are they incentivized only to take bookings?
Solar is now the engine of the global energy transition.
In 2024 alone, the world added 548 GW of solar, taking total capacity to 2,205 GW, with solar delivering nearly 8% of global electricity and accounting for 81% of all renewable capacity additions. Investment patterns confirm a structural shift in the energy economy.
Solar attracted USD 521B in 2024, with over USD 2.35T invested since 2016, cementing its position as the world’s leading clean energy asset. For the first time, clean energy investment is consistently outpacing fossil fuels at a global level.
But growth remains concentrated, leaving much of the Global South under-served despite vast solar potential.
In its Global Solar Trends and Outlook 2025 report, the International Solar Alliance highlights the next priority: expanding access to capital and scaling deployment across LDCs, SIDS, Africa and Latin America to make the transition truly inclusive.

Global solar investment surged from USD 146bn (2016) to USD 521bn (2024), powering over 2.2 TW of installed capacity and reshaping the economics of energy. In 2024 alone, 548 GW was added, a 33% year-on-year rise, with solar accounting for 81% of all new renewable capacity additions and 45% of cumulative renewable capacity worldwide.
Yet the transition remains uneven. Clean energy investment is accelerating, but its distribution is not.
Africa and Latin America received <7% of solar investment in 2024, despite some of the world’s strongest solar potential. Bridging this gap is critical to a just and truly global energy transition.
The next phase of the transition must focus on inclusion, not just scale.
In its Global Solar Trends and Outlook 2025 report, the International Solar Alliance outlines a clear path forward, through catalytic finance, digital platforms, regional partnerships, and technology roadmaps across LDCs, SIDS, APAC, Africa, and Latin America and the Caribbean.

Solar deployment is expanding rapidly, but not evenly.
In 2024, Asia-Pacific delivered 71% of new solar capacity, while the Middle East and Africa together contributed just ~1%, despite vast untapped solar potential.
The investment gap is even sharper.
Nearly 80% of the USD 521B invested flowed to developed economies, India and China.
Meanwhile, LDCs and SIDS received less than 1% combined, and Africa just 2%, highlighting deep structural barriers in markets that need solar the most.
This imbalance is not about resource potential, it is about financing conditions, grid readiness, and institutional capacity.
Many high-irradiation countries face borrowing costs several times higher than OECD markets, raising tariffs and slowing project development.
Closing this gap is central to a resilient and inclusive energy transition.
In its Global Solar Trends and Outlook 2025 report, the International Solar Alliance underscores that the next phase of solar growth must focus on correcting this imbalance, through blended finance, solar facilities, and scalable digital platforms that unlock investment where it matters most.
