I am honoured to be involved in this live next week to talk about the Sameer Project's incredible achievement of constructing a desalination plant in Gaza.
October 6th 1pm Palestine/11am UK time.
“I like listening for something that doesn’t want to make a sound. I pay attention, and that makes life more beautiful, for if we don’t have to pay attention there really is no life.”
(Walser, Jakob von Gunten)
My single favorite moment in War & Peace involves a moonlit tree outside a bedroom window. The anxious and unhappy Prince Andrei, unable to sleep, goes to the window and opens it. “The night was fresh and stilly bright. Just under his window was a row of trimmed trees, black on one side and silvery bright on the other … Further beyond the black trees was some roof glistening with dew, to the right a big, curly tree with a bright white trunk and branches, and above it a nearly full moon against the light, nearly starless spring sky.”
As Prince Andrei marvels at the sky lit up, he hears a commotion in the vast house all around him. In the rooms above and below, people are opening their windows, drawn to the moonlight. He hears the voices of two young women arguing. The first says, “Come to bed!” To which her friend replies, in a voice overcome with beauty, “I can’t sleep, I don’t want to sleep. Just look how lovely it is! Ah, how lovely! Wake up, Sonya,” she adds (“almost with tears in her voice”). “There’s never, never been such a lovely night.” A scene so beautiful it breaks your heart.
My 5 year old daughter said if I ever became a werewolf she would still love me. She said she’d brush my fur, brush my teeth, feed me meat, and let me howl at the moon. I don’t know what I did to deserve this child but apparently I have secured lifelong werewolf hospice care.
I've been so mentally well the last 2 years off of this website. I forgot how it gives you instant brainworms and then you get stuck scrolling trying to heal from them somehow, but just taking more damage
The number of independent bookshops in Britain and Ireland is at a 14-year high. This follows a mini-resurgence in book buying, which, some research suggests, is being driven by young people.
In these days of digital overload, this is a hugely encouraging development. https://t.co/jn3tv7pg0n
This girl seems to be less interested in texting than every other girl I've ever 'talked to' (like 3) yet more receptive in person than all of the others as well, I have no idea how to read this and it's put my mind in a constant state of agitation
