When we take turns paying in full, we experience both giving and receiving gratitude. Expressing love for someone, and them, in turn, showing love for us.

When we split all bills, on the other hand, every would-be act of friendship turns into a banal commercial transaction. What should feel like exchanges of love get degraded into accounting reconciliations. The divine gets subverted by the mundane, and human bonds that should be strengthened eventually get corroded.

It’s not worth it. True friendship deserves better.
