1. Social Democracy: Constitutional democracy cannot survive only through elections and courts; it needs social democracy based on liberty, equality and fraternity.

Fraternity:
For Ambedkar, without fraternity, liberty and equality remain only “coats of paint”; rights become meaningful only when citizens recognise each other as equals.

2. Law–Culture Gap: As Andre Beteille suggests, law may decide the direction society should take, but culture decides how society actually behaves.

3. Trust as Social Capital: Fraternity creates trust, cooperation and confidence among citizens; communal distrust destroys the social capital needed for democracy and development.

4. Social Solidarity (Durkheim): Fraternity works as moral solidarity, binding diverse groups across caste, religion, language and region.

5. Politics of Polarisation: When political mobilisation is built on fear and hostility, citizens begin to see each other as threats rather than members of a shared community.
