Zubeen Garg Funeral
This is not just a funeral procession. This is an inheritance of love ! This is Assam teaching its youngest children how to mourn an icon, and in that mourning, how to belong.
From Jorhat to Tezpur, from Dibrugarh to Dhuburi, from Sadiya to Nalbari - in small towns and faraway villages, people are standing still before television sets, streaming on their phones, whispering to one another that this is the end of something vast and precious. Across these places where songs once carried through tea gardens and ferries, where Zubeen’s voice was part of wedding nights, Bihu, Puja and protest marches alike, there is now only one shared recognition: he was the last icon who could speak to all Assamese people at once, across caste, creed, dialect, generation.
And today in Guwahati, in the shadow of Borjhar to Kahilipara, there is an unprecedented sea of humanity.
For a generation that never learned to walk in homage, look at them now, shoulder to shoulder, dusty feet moving in step with grief.
For a generation who never paused for Republic Day or Independence Day broadcasts, see them glued to every channel, every livestream, as though history itself were unfolding.
For a generation raised on swipes and silence, see them gathering in clusters around grandparents, hearing about the Assam Agitation, about Bhupen Hazarika’s cortege, about funeral marches of another millennium.
For a generation accused of living only in pixels and emojis, see them today trading hashtags for footsteps, likes for folded hands, screens for the streets.
This is not just mourning, it is Assam’s rawest truth revealed - that when we love, we love without measure, that when we lose, we do not hide our loss. We flood highways, we climb rooftops, we cry together. No AI prompt, no algorithm could have scripted this grief; it is real, uncontainable, as wide as the Brahmaputra itself.
And as the coffin reaches Kahilipara, the surge is thunderous - the crescendo of an ending. For those who remember Bhupen, for those who grew up with Zubeen, and for those who now learn for the first time what it means to lose someone who carried your language and your soul in his voice, one truth rises above all: this is the end of an era. Assam will have more singers, more stars, more celebrities, but never again an icon like this.
Zubeen Garg was the last icon of the Assamese people in this millennium.
After discussions with the family of Zubeen Garg, #AssamCabinet has approved allotment of 10 bigha land in Kamarkuchi, near Guwahati where our #BelovedZubeen will be laid to rest on September 23.
I’m glad to see that the much-anticipated meeting between the Deshi and Goriya communities and the Jatiya Sangrami Sena has taken place in Sivasagar.
I believe that all misunderstandings will be resolved and that the Deshi people will no longer face harassment moving forward.
Operation Sindoor showcased the sharp rise of India’s defence power and technological might. With indigenous missiles like Short range surface to Air missile ‘Akash’, AI-powered drones, satellite-backed surveillance from #ISRO, and layered air defence systems with assets from the tri-services combined under the Integrated Air Command and Control System (IACCS) of Indian Air Force, India delivered precision strikes and neutralized enemy threats without crossing borders. The seamless synergy of armed forces, public R&D, and private innovation proved that India’s military is proactive, self-reliant, and globally competitive.
