#engl398R another of Perl & Schwartz’s “Rewriter’s Concerns” that definitely applies to my revision is “adjusting shaky voice” I feel like I have a tendency to get rather chatty in sections and change levels of formality. Reading aloud absolutely helps with this.

#engl398R for my revision I will mostly be adding and fleshing out backstory for a small section of my experimental essay. I think adding backstory will create an interesting juxtaposition between the first and second parts and an interesting tone shift.

#engl398R developing backstory will be really essential for my draft. I am planning to blow up a moment of a story where the backstory and context of the night the event takes places adds more drama and emotion. This revision gives me the chance to highlight that.

#engl398R one big thing I want to work on in my revised essay is to write something people will really connect with strong visuals. I want to add more artful description because my writing generally lacks visual qualities despite my being a very visual person!

I also found their points about how to make a story more interesting very important. I especially found the part about opposing point of views very interesting. It is true that adding those elements builds complexity and tension, and ultimately interest

One example I loved was Picasso’s “The Bull”. The first draft is unassuming- a simple line drawing that resembles the shapes of a bull. Layers are progressively added and the full drawing comes through. Each stage is a solid rendering, but the last is most impressive.

We read “The Craft of Revision” by Perl & Schwartz. There were lots of stand out points made but the biggest was that revision can turn any crappy draft into a work of art, examples to follow. #engl398R

Hi @EricaRmars I love your idea of using suggested edits! Such an underrated tool that allows us to pick apart each other’s writing (constructively) but still gives the writer the choice of whether to implement the suggestion or not.

Hi @AlanHur72242577 I agree that time constraints are almost always the cause of insufficient revision. I am glad we were all able to meet this morning (a week before it is due) to go over everything. Excited for the revising process to begin!

Hi @DangBuuPham1 , I think we have all been in the same situation as you. I think since we are finished with a full draft so early, we will have plenty of revising time and time to speak up about each other’s work.
