💥🔎 Gaethje’s coach Trevor Wittman broke down the win over Ilia Topuria. They studied his stance and angles down to the smallest details.

“The plan was to use footwork, move outside his lead leg, and work left-side angles whenever we were the ones applying pressure. Because when he starts backing up like this [with his arm extended], that’s dangerous. In that position, if you’re open, he’s very good at turning his shoulder and landing hooks.

The idea was to draw him out, avoid low kicks early, and use more high kicks instead—to take away his power hand and make him respect us. In most of his fights, when he [Ilia] gets tired, he starts transitioning from this position [leaning forward] to this one [leaning back]. And once he shifts here, it becomes a battle of jabs. The moment he got onto his back foot, I thought, ‘That’s it.’

Justin is a gangster. To survive those body shots… I think Ilia made a big mistake when he went to the ground. Justin was hurt, but he’s very smart in those situations. He knows when to take a breather. There were even moments in the third and fourth rounds when I was thinking, ‘Stop taking breaks and fight!’ But of course, that’s easier said than done.

Overall, when Ilia realized who Justin really was, I knew we were starting to take over the fight. If not for those body shots… those were the moments that scared me.”
