Meta admits AI agents are moving slower than expected

🤖 Mark Zuckerberg reportedly acknowledged internally that the development of AI agents at Meta is not accelerating as quickly as expected.
According to Reuters, during an internal town hall, Zuckerberg said that over the past few months the trajectory of agentic development has not grown at the pace the company anticipated, and that some of Meta’s organizational bets have not yet delivered the expected results.

🧠 This matters because Meta had reorganized a major part of the company around AI: layoffs, staff reassignments, AI-focused teams and huge infrastructure investments. The idea was to prepare for a future where agents would dramatically increase productivity, automation and internal operational capacity.
But reality, at least for now, seems more complicated.
Zuckerberg reportedly said that leadership was very optimistic earlier this year, also looking at tools like Claude Code, but that the concrete benefits have not arrived as quickly as imagined. Meta expects more visible results in the next three to six months, but the message is clear: turning AI agents into real business value is much harder than showing them in a demo.

📌 In my opinion, this story is important because it breaks part of the magical narrative around agents.
Over the past few months, we have talked about them as the next major leap in AI: systems able to work autonomously, write code, manage tasks, organize workflows, analyze data and reduce the burden on entire teams. All of that may be true in potential, but there is a huge gap between potential and real enterprise integration, made of quality, reliability, control, process, security and trust.

💭 Meta’s case shows that agentic AI is not a magic button companies can press to instantly become more efficient. It is a systems change. And systems changes require time, governance and a very precise understanding of where automation truly helps and where it only creates more complexity.
Maybe the next phase of AI will not be about bigger promises, but more concrete questions: where do agents actually work, how much do they really save, how reliable are they and which processes need to be redesigned before they can deliver value?
