Most Indians don't know this, but the Dreze family are literally academic royalty in Belgium.
Jean's brother the late Xavier Dreze was a highly regarded Marketing professor at UCLA's Anderson School of Management. He was one of the very very few who could do both modeling and consumer behavior research. He died very young at age 48. His obituary says he was a true polymath with multiple academic and sporting talents.
Jean's father the late Jacques Dreze was an economist at the Université Catholique de Louvain. He was a highly regarded economist and the first president of the European Economic Association. He has collaborated with nobel laureates Robert Aumann and Franco Modigliani and his publication record is comparable with the best in the field.
Jean Dreze could have had a very cushy life with his family legacy, white skin and European passport. Even in India, he could have been a social butterfly flitting in and out of five star hotels and running think tanks funded hy veated interests. Instead, he took Indian citizenship, learnt Hindi and roughs it out in rural Jharkhand. He designed many schemes and his footprint is all over Indian economic policy.
You may like him or hate him. But Jean Dreze is more Indian than anyone who was born Indian, including you and me. He chose to be Indian. And he has dedicated his life to India.
Think of this the next time some illiterate journalist asks "Who is Jean Dreze?"
From 2023 to 2026, Google Earth's updated satellite imagery shows what's left of Gaza.
The images reflect what Human Rights Watch has already found: Israel has caused deliberate, widespread destruction throughout Gaza ⤵️
This is a terrible idea. The current stadium is more than enough for cricket needs.
Making another massive cricket stadium in a city that already has a very decent one, just for 7 IPL games and one odd rotation international match every 3 years is a criminal waste of money.
Please make smaller mixed use facilities that support different sports, commercial activities and concerts and shows like the Ajax stadium.
Or if you have to spend it on cricket, you have 33 districts, many would love to have a decent cricket pitch.
Attacking the journalist for asking the Prime Minister a question betrays the very values the diplomat sought to defend; mocking the diplomat for the way he speaks is snobbery, not liberalism; and portraying India as a land of snake charmers reflects a lingering colonial, racist hangover.
@anshupanigrahii Congratulations. Yes, a new phase of hindutva built on democratic murder of electorate through bogus SIR exercises and connivance with Gyanesh. May god save the country from this new phase of hindutva. 🙏

The Artemis II crew captured beautiful, high-resolution images of our home planet during their journey to the Moon. As @Astro_Christina put it: "You guys look great."

Bursting with pride and relief for @IamSanjuSamson after his superlative innings in today’s virtual quarterfinal against the WestIndies. I had suffered for him as earlier setbacks saw him lose his place in the side. Today he showed the world why he deserved to be there in the first place. Proud of Thiruvananthapuram’s native son, the Pride of India, #NammudeSanju! 🇮🇳

I write for ThePrint - Urban Local Bodies are an important pillar for building India's resilience to tackle climate change. The upcoming National Adaptation Plan presents a crucial policy window to get this decentralised approach right.

@theliverdoc@AjayChandr41722 Absence of peer reviewed findings does not mean that these observations are myth. For me - drinking coffee immediately increases anxiety and heart palpitations. If I drink it after 12 PM - I am unable to fall asleep before 2 am. Surely helpful for the bowel movements though 😁

The 2023 @ForestSurvey (FSI) registers a marginal increase in #India’s #forest cover by 156 km², a deceitful inflation that hides an inconvenient truth of colossal loss of natural #forests as an analysis by #PrakritiSrivastava@krithika_1193 & myself shows. Besides, the @ForestSurvey report #ISFR2023 has disregarded #SupremeCourt orders.
