Criticise me as much as you want for saying this, but this is the first time the people of Tamil Nadu have genuine hope that corruption can be eliminated from public life.

Twenty days into the TVK government, CM Vijay did something interesting today.

He went back to Trichy, one of the two constituencies that voted for him, thanked people, called himself their servant, urged Gen Z to stay engaged with politics and said he wears black and white because his approach is not coloured or layered, just simple.

It is easy to criticise this as a Chief Minister refusing to give up campaign mode. But it is also likely that he is playing to his biggest strength as an orator, keeping people engaged with his politics and his party’s future. It helps answer criticism about access, reminds supporters of the battles he says he fought to get here and keeps alive his narrative of challenging the Dravidian parties. The DMK, he said, is now distant from the people, while the AIADMK is a spent force. He also reminded supporters of the week after results when both parties tried to join forces to stop him from coming to power.

In the coming days, he could travel to districts he could not visit during the campaign. All of this may well be a different kind of political engagement
