In a no-tech classroom where everyone is required to use pen and paper but there’s one student who gets to use a laptop, obviously it’s because they have a disability. These things are supposed to be confidential, right?

anti-tech policies are ableist. If you require an accommodation letter for a student to use technology, you immediately notify the entire class that that individual has a disability, whether they want people to know or not.

Attended my very first ASC this week and was able to present two of my WIPs! Illicit Masculinity and From Victim to Violent Offender 🥰 Presenting in crim can get heavy and difficult, but I always try to get my panel audiences to laugh to help ease the weight and it went well!

This afternoon I received the Graduate Dean’s Distinctive Thesis Award for my work last Spring 🥰 I feel so grateful for my thesis committee chair, Meredith Worthen, for nominating me for this prize and for supporting me throughout my grad school journey.

And on a different but somewhat related note— there’s also a severe lack of changing tables in bathrooms. I’ve only seen them in the student union, so most times I end up changing my baby on a mat on the bathroom floor 🙃

Navigating campus with a baby in a stroller has shown me just how inaccessible OU campus is. Some buildings with door buttons don’t work and many bathrooms do not have stalls large enough to bring the stroller in with me.

It’s also a huge pet peeve of mine when professors are not willing to work with their students. We’re here to teach them, if they want to learn but need accommodations to do so, why are we not helping them?

So, I'm happy I passed my comps and am now a PhD candidate. Still, going through them made me think a lot about the odd/toxic ways we gauge "expertise" in soc and academia broadly. Personally, I feel we should rethink how we do comprehensive exams, or do away with them entirely.

spent my weekend refreshing and redecorating my office in both an attempt to end the writers block I’ve had this summer and create a productive and calming environment for completing the upcoming semester while pregnant

my office is a much happier place to be now 🥰

the Star Wars prints are from a dear friend who passed away suddenly in January. I miss them dearly, and having a memory of them in my office is very meaningful to me.

all the artwork on the walls hold dear memories for me as well, and this space truly feels like my own now
