Head of the Peace Commission @sallysamai speaks about the two minutes of national silence to be observed at noon on Sunday January 18, National Remembrance Day. The 120 will preceded the Presidential Address.
#TruthTellers#NaTrueDaeLas
Following the Presidential Proclamation designating #January18 as National Remembrance Day & the call for citizens to wear a white ribbon or a piece of white cloth as a symbol of peace, the Executive Sec. of the @icpncsl@sallysamai,
When the late journalist Dominic Kabbah-Kargbo reported in December 1998 that rebels had descended on Waterloo “like manna from heaven” and were advancing towards Freetown, he was hounded and pilloried by the authorities, dismissed as spreading false news. Days later, my dear friend Sulaiman Momodu bravely reported that the city’s last line of defence had collapsed at Waterloo itself, and indeed the rebels ( or sobels) were marching towards town. For that truth, the then Information Minister declared him wanted, and SMT, as he is fondly called, had to hide for days in the bunkers at Fourah Bay College.
That was 27 years ago. The rest, as they say, is history. Yes, the rebels came. And I can still hear the haunting rhythm of the AK‑47, echoing like the Municipal School bell : “boys! girls! come to school”—repeatedly, relentlessly.
Today, as the President declares January 18 as Remembrance Day, and calls on citizens to wear a white ribbon or a piece of white cloth as a symbol of peace, I stood with the UN Country Team as the @icpncsl Executive Secretary, @sallysamai bestowed upon us this gesture of remembrance.
The war was horrific. It was brutish. It was dehumanizing. And as I pinned that white ribbon, I whispered to myself: Never again. I hope.

In Loving Memory of Dr. Jane Goodall
Today, we mourn the loss of a remarkable soul whose life changed the world. Dr. Jane Goodall was more than a pioneering scientist—she was a voice for the voiceless, a tireless advocate for our planet, and a beacon of compassion and wisdom.
Through her groundbreaking work with chimpanzees, Jane reshaped our understanding of the natural world and of ourselves. But it was her deep empathy, her unwavering hope, and her lifelong dedication to conservation and peace that made her a global icon and an inspiration to millions.
Her legacy lives on in every forest she helped protect, in every young mind she inspired, and in every act of kindness sparked by her example. Though she has left this world, her spirit will forever echo in the rustle of the leaves, the calls of the wild, and the hearts of those who continue her mission.
Thank you, Jane, for showing us how to listen, how to care, and how to hope. You will never be forgotten.
Rest in peace.

We’re focusing on enhancing national mediation systems, as required by the @ecowas_cedeao Protocols. Preventive diplomacy is no longer optional—it’s essential. Grateful to contribute to conversations shaping a more peaceful West Africa. #Mediation#ConflictPrevention#Accra2025
Honoured to be in Accra for the ECOWAS of the Peoples meeting, engaging with fellow peacebuilders from across West Africa. Strengthening regional collaboration is vital if we are to address today’s complex conflicts and build sustainable peace. @ecowas_cedeao#PeaceAndProsperity
The discussions here highlight the value of peer learning. Sharing Sierra Leone’s experience with our National Peace Commission and learning from others has been both inspiring and practical. We must invest more in national infrastructures for peace. @icpncsl#ECOWASOfThePeoples
