Another Incident of Alleged Abuse of Power by the Social Elite

Prof. Dr. Muhammad Arif Khan Saqi, Chairman of the Department of Islamic Learning, University of Karachi, has claimed that he was travelling to the University of Karachi during the morning hours of Tuesday, September 8.

According to Prof. Saqi, he had hired an online transport service. When they reached the turning point at Saforah Chowk, the gate of Sindh Green Hotel opened and the security guards stopped the traffic. The driver stopped the car, while a Toyota Revo (commonly known as a “Dala”) coming out of the hotel allegedly reversed in haste and hit the car in which Prof. Saqi was travelling.

Prof. Saqi says that he asked the driver of the Revo to compensate the taxi driver, as the driver could not afford the expenses himself. The driver initially agreed, saying that they would take care of the matter. Prof. Saqi then asked him to provide his name so that the driver could contact him later.

According to Prof. Saqi, this allegedly triggered the driver, who he identifies as the owner of Sindh Green Hotel. He claims that the man verbally abused him and struck him with a gun. He further alleges that the hotel guards joined in and dragged both him and the taxi driver into the hotel office.

Prof. Saqi says that the alleged assault and mistreatment continued inside the office, where he and the driver were reportedly held for some time against their will.

Later, police from the Cantonment area arrived and escorted the two injured men to Sachal Police Station.

Massive evictions are taking place across #Islamabad. Thousands of families are being forcefully displaced with no alternative housing. Some of these settlements are pre-partition which means they were here before many of us moved to Islamabad.

One of the Christian abaadis under threat is also one of the oldest Christian neighbourhoods in the city where workers of the city reside. Some of these residents are literally the builders of this city, they can name which public infrastructure they helped build.

In addition, Rimsha Colony which is another Christian Abaadi where CDA and Islamabad administration themselves settled people are also facing an eviction threat. Please bear in mind this is happening to thousands of Islamabad residents who have built,the city, they run the city and provide services to all. From sanitation workers to house helpers, lab technicians to nurses, drivers to mechanics - everyone who serves the city lives in these areas. Islamabad is the most expensive city of Pakistan. Where does the state think these people will go? Amidst a global crisis with soaring prices of basic commodities - when will state fulfil its basic obligations? Ah yes. Another heroic contribution to history. A comedian writes a book on Pakistan and the very idea of Pakistan while cheerfully admitting he has never studied South Asian history. The ignorance is at least honest. The confidence is limitless.

It is almost admirable. Why trouble yourself with facts when vibes are enough. Who needs to understand Congress and Muslim League politics, British policy or Partition when you can string together opinions and sell them as ideas. Research is an outdated inconvenience.
