I know I don't usually Tweet much anymore, nor have I really spoken up about political issues in the past, but as Iran plays Egypt in the World Cup tonight, this felt too important not to share.
Rashid Mazaheri, the former Iranian national team goalkeeper disappeared in February after posting online criticism of the regime. His home was raided and he was arrested. He is currently jailed and reportedly being held in severe solitary confinement.
While he may be missing from the pitch tonight, I ask that you keep him in mind and share his story to anyone willing to listen.

Mehdi Hasan: Do you think there are too many Muslims in Germany?
German AfD politician Maximilian Krah: I don't want to have 10,000 Somalis.
Hasan: You don't like Somalis.
Krah: I know how Somalis perform in Western countries and I know how Iranians perform in Western countries. Both are Muslims.
@Phoeniciacel@setaregah As much as I'd love to believe it, it just feels like a pipe dream that anything like that could be happening at any meaningful scale this late into it all.
Also separately, could you check your DMs? 😁
@NazaninNour And 48 countries are playing in the world cup. You've listed 2 examples and are drawing a huge line to connect to a dot that is irrelevant.
@choopanam Have you guys thought about a dedicated account that just does this? That way it can also serve a timeline of people getting called out over time
Can agree to disagree. I've seen him do enough mental gymnastics when it comes to defending Islam and outright peddling incorrect facts to an audience that he knows won't push back that at some point the only logical conclusion is that he's doing it, as you say, in a sinister manner.
@jpodhoretz Hey there! It’s the first. This is at a mosque, where we were invited by the congregation to speak before prayer. In this context, head coverings are the respectful move. One of the fun parts of being a rep for NYC is learning different customs for so many communities. Cheers!
