Again and again, shame on Western media that continues to call this a “ceasefire.”

By the Western media’s definition, an Israeli “ceasefire” apparently includes the continued killing of families, especially those with very young children, blowing up residential buildings, burning tents sheltering displaced people, banning international journalists, blocking life-saving medical supplies, and restricting, and on many days completely preventing, patients from leaving Gaza for urgently needed medical treatment abroad.

Hamas is dead and finished. But Israel continues to pretend it is alive to continue the genocide. A brilliant article in Foreign Affairs by Jaser AbuMousa lays out the case:

1) Israel has killed nearly the entire pre-October 7 leadership. Sinwar, Haniyeh, Deif, Mohammed Sinwar, Haddad, and his replacement Odeh are all dead. Only Imad Aqel remains from the senior prewar ranks.

2) The group cannot pick a leader. It failed to replace Yahya Sinwar. A February 2026 vote produced no winner. It is now run by a deadlocked five-man council split between Khalil al-Hayya and Khaled Mashal.

3) External support has collapsed. The Iran relationship is effectively over. Qatar expelled leaders under US pressure. The old $100 million a year from Iran and roughly $360 million from Qatar are gone.

4) Hamas is broke. Salaries for 49,000 officials arrive intermittently. It now taxes black-market relief goods and cleared importers, which makes life worse for ordinary Gazans, who pay four times prewar prices.

5) It can no longer resist. Rockets, tunnels, and weapons workshops are destroyed and cannot be rebuilt under blockade. Since the ceasefire, Israel has killed over 1,000 Gazans and Hamas has answered with statements.

6) Public support is eroding. Backing for armed struggle fell from 51% in September 2023 to 34% in October 2025. Hamas has offered to hand over administration, which AbuMousa reads as a distress signal, not a tactic.

So why does Israel pretend that Hamas is strong? Netanyahu needs the threat to justify indefinite occupation, avoiding Palestinian statehood, and his far-right alliance before October elections. It also wants to empty Gaza and build settlements there and needs an excuse to finish the genocide. Don't buy it.
