This is one of the key British colonial policy papers that directly shaped the final years of British Somaliland and set the stage for the events of 1960.
The UK decided to accelerate constitutional development in British Somaliland at an unusually fast pace because the neighboring Italian Trust Territory of Somalia was scheduled to become independent in December 1960.
London wanted to avoid a situation where one Somali territory was independent while the other was still a colony, especially given strong pan-Somali sentiment and the desire in parts of the #Protectorate for closer association (or union) with Somalia.
Sadia Moalim Ali (Sacdiya Bajaaj), a young Somali woman driving a bajaj to survive and support her family, has been sentenced to 3 years in prison for peacefully speaking out against corruption, unemployment, and injustice. After nearly 3 months in custody, her voice is silenced.
Somalia’s youth make up ~70% of the population yet face no real jobs, education, or opportunities to shape their future or join systems that could change things. Many risk their lives at sea as their only hope. Now even their right to speak is being taken away.
This is not justice—it’s the criminalization of hope. Stand with Sadia, young journalists, activists, and all the voiceless. #FreeSadiaBajaaj #JusticeForSadia #SomaliaYouth
So I visited an Austro-Hungarian castle in Italy showing a map of the Horn of Africa from centuries ago. And of course Somalia did not include Somaliland then, just as it doesn’t include it now.
