@mattyglesias Much easier to reduce the deficit when entitlement spending isn’t exploding, the Cold War ends, and you can execute a once in a lifetime drawdown of defense spending from 6%->3% of GDP.

[SAM @SAMgujz]

@Noahpinion I don’t think this is like a “switch flip” scenario where it doesn’t matter at all until the country falls apart.

China’s demographics are already a drag on its growth and will be a persistently larger drag throughout the century.

[SAM @SAMgujz]

@infantserbian “The world hasn't seen this before.”

An alliance between Russia and China? lol wut

[SAM @SAMgujz]

@Noahpinion I’ll tell you what, with Hitler, the more I read about the guy the more I don’t care for him.

[SAM @SAMgujz]

@Noahpinion Noah, you’ve really got to retract your case that the country most similar to America is China and accept the fact it’s Brazil.

[SAM @SAMgujz]

@kissinguuuuu Mandarin isn’t beautiful? Homie go watch Dangerous Liasons.

[Glenn Greenwald @ggreenwald]

A lot of western leftists look at Brazil (and other places) and see it as some abstract fun ideological laboratory, relevant solely through the prism of the issues they prioritize from a distance (US imperialism, Israel, the viability socialism in Latin America, etc. etc.).

In reality, tens of millions of poor people, black people, working-class Brazilians, etc. voted for Bolsonaro again (just as their American counterparts voted for Trump). If you talk to random apolitical people, what they worry about is not what the David Adlers worry about when jetting into Brazil, but rather what plagues their daily lives: extreme levels of street violence, drug gangs, economic misery, lack of good education and health care for their kids, etc.

You can lecture them all they want that Lula is better for them but they've been hearing that forever. Lula and his party have been in the presidency in Brazil for 20 of the last 26 years. Younger people don't know and don't care about the inspiring mythology and iconography of Lula.

They just don't think the government cares about their lives and so blame those in power: same story throughout the democratic world. It's not ultimately all that complicated.

[SAM @SAMgujz]

@ishaantharoor Probably unlikely the next US President is more progressive than Biden but not impossible.

[Joanfates @LadybugAbridge]

Are you proposing that we use the strength of the United States to install democratic regimes around the world?

[SAM @SAMgujz]

@NobleQAli My guy do you know who the President of China currently is?

[SAM @SAMgujz]

@AppleWood36 @Ericrse37986 Ever been to either place?

[SAM @SAMgujz]

@GraduatedBen Love discovering different countries weird axes of polarization and conspiracy.

[SAM @SAMgujz]

@chucklemea61294 I will be correct in a month and then again in a few years.

[SAM @SAMgujz]

@ProgDirectorate Wut?

[SAM @SAMgujz]

@snackvampire It is true that to maintain left wing hegemony you need to end elections and liberally use force.

[SAM @SAMgujz]

If I was forced to leave the United States and live abroad for the rest of my life, my short list of countries would be something like: India, Taiwan, Brazil, and the rest of the Anglosphere.

[SAM @SAMgujz]

@annakhachiyan This is true for the most part. They’re also more fun.

Much higher concentration of genuine mental illness though.

[SAM @SAMgujz]

@GianniIsATank34 @GeopolWonk Well then better start thinking more about how to win the votes of subhuman cavedwellers!
