I write about sites like this and share interesting niche ideas several times every week.
And it's 100% free!
One of my sites (DR 2.9) is the same (farming niche).
Traffic exploded post-HCU and:
1. Covered with ads (Adsense).
2. No podcast.
3. No social following of any kind.
4. No consulting.
The only thing I've done that may correlate is rewrite all original content and removed most affiliate links from the site (I purchased it off Flippa).
Today, my little one-person business crossed $7.5M in total revenue.
It took 1,712 days, I ran zero ads & operate at a ~91% margin.
Here are the 22 steps of my wild & strange journey:
Hope they are helpful to someone ↓
AppSumo is about to do $100 million in revenue this year.
But the first 10 years:
• Rejected by Google (2x)
• Fired by FB after 9 months
• Built 20+ startups that didn’t work out
Here are 9 pieces of brutally honest BUSINESS advice (I wish I knew earlier):
Everything is based on energy.
Everything you see now, every war, every invention, even the moon and the stars.
Everything has been created or destroyed by energy.
The difference between a successful and a failed business?
Energy.
Leadership and visionaries simply redirect the energies of men.
Steve Jobs didn't actually CREATE the iPhone.
Some miner put his energy into extracting the raw materials from the earth.
Some engineer put his energy into building the parts.
Some design team put their energy into working to fit all the pieces into place.
Steve Jobs had the energy to send the design back to the designers.
He had the energy to yell and command it be this or that way.
If he had a LAZY design team, Apple wouldn't have worked.
If he had a LAZY engineer, Apple wouldn't have worked.
There is no room for lack of energy in a successful company.
To do anything great, tremendous amounts of energy must be spent.
Calories must be burned.
Sacrifices must be made.
Every single day over 1,000 man-hours of some of the brightest men on the planet are SPENT to make THE REAL WORLD students successful.
When you see the success stories I want you to understand it is ENERGY that made them real.
A child is raised through the combined energies of his mother, father, teachers and society.
A lie is propagated to the masses through the coordinated energies of the media machines.
ENERGY is the only thing that is real.
It is the ultimate decider of what is valuable, what propagates and what survives.
When you see less energy devoted towards a project, goal, task or idea, be sure that it is DYING.
Only constant unrelenting energy can keep something alive.
Only energy can make it grow.
This is why The Matrix tries so hard to make you weak,
This is why it works so hard to sap you of your energy.
Because if you have no energy, you are truly useless in this world.
Unable to resist.

Last month, my friends racked up *millions* of views on X.
But the algorithm buries all the best content before you can put any of it into practice.

I’m obsessed with great leadership.
But when I was young, I wasted years and opportunities not knowing what great leadership looked like.
Learn from my mistakes.
21 clear signals you have a great leader:
Here is how to WIN at SEO in 2024:
- Exclusively focus on high ROI niches and projects
- Incorporate AI to make you as efficient as possible
- Track EVERYTHING, the more data, the more power
- Build sites with the aim of becoming authority sites
- Focus on foundational link building first
- Build out evergreen link bait, ego bait and clickbait
- Match the SERP intent on a granular level
- Diversify other channels to boost your brand searches
- Invest resources into relevant parasite pages for your highest ROI keywords to take more SERP realty
- Scale growth by acquiring inactive or undervalued competitors
- Invest in link building campaigns if you have capital
- Audit your SEO, CRO & CTAs quarterly for consistent growth
- Get investment or find a partner that can compliment your skills, personality and has the same aptitude for work as you
Quick Marketing Challenge
Something a little different this week:
I like to ask newer copywriters if they study the history of the craft.
Almost all of them say no.
And I think that’s a big mistake.
Why?
Why should you study the history of copywriting?
Reddit is outranking you, even for your own content, because of THREE different factors, with the last being the one most people in SEO have NO idea about...
1 - For the last ~9 months, Google has been on what feels like a god given mission to turbocharge UGC signals... You see it across the board though: Quora is flying, UGC sites (and subdomains) are being abused for parasite SEO and even in our industry, one of the smaller forums @BuilderSociety has seen a ~2,100% gain.
And who are the kings of UGC? Reddit.
2 - Not only have UGC signals gone through the roof, but Google has doubled down on authority signals since rolling penguin was released.
This means that most sites with HUGE link profiles (DR90+) are treated as trust worthy for ANY niche and able to rank as a "generic" authority.
3 - Link Inversion. A signal not many in SEO know about, and one that @dejanseo did a fantastic case study on several years ago.
The concept is easy to understand: It doesn't matter who was first to publish content, it matters whoever has the most authoritative page. That is how Google prioritizes content, not on who indexed first.
And you put all 3 of these things together? Reddit is a POWERHOUSE that can literally outrank you for pages that you created and can rank for SERPs where your site doesn't even match the intent anymore...
Is this fair? Absolutely not.
Is it because Google is doing a deal with Reddit? Partially.
Would this be the case without said deal?
Probably not...
