“Almost 25%, the increase in American tomato prices since last year. Donald Trump tore up a deal on tomatoes from Mexico (where America gets 90% of its favourite vegetable after the potato), and the war with Iran has hit food prices broadly”
“After all, there is a cost-of-living crisis on. For most, it is a cost-of-living-well crisis. It is small luxuries rather than necessities that are being squeezed. “
Excellent meeting yesterday with Vice President of the Libyan Presidential Council Musa al-Koni. I emphasized that the United States will be with Libya step-by-step as it works toward unification and reform of its political, military, and economic institutions. We agreed that responsibility and authority to shape the country’s path forward rests firmly in Libyan hands and that path should be as inclusive as possible, ensuring wide-ranging support across regions.

@nberpubs@DrDaronAcemoglu Here is a copy of my paper; "Will AI Improve Undergraduate Economics Education?". My piece is a direct extension of this new NBER paper with my very narrow focus. Of course, the AI treatment has heterogeneous effects. What are we maximizing here?

I'm often intrigued by questions from strangers. Yesterday on the train, for example, someone recognized me as "that economist" and asked why "America, as the most powerful economy, doesn't run balanced trade or surpluses with all other countries?"
"Good question," I replied, continuing with a haircut analogy:
"For years, I've run chronic deficits with the people who cut my hair. To achieve balance, I'd have to stop getting haircuts or cut their hair – a situation where we'd all be worse off. It's better for me to have a 'haircut deficit' and offset it with a surplus elsewhere."
Now imagine if I were the reserve currency issuer, effectively exchanging paper currency that other countries wish to hold for their exports of goods and services—a significant advantage and one that would be inclined to record trade deficits. The key is to avoid excessive deficits.

"Democracy and free speech are certainly under challenge in many European countries.. The challenge is not coming from governments"
"These criticisms are pretty rich coming from a President who is quite uniquely authoritarian"
"Democracy and free speech are under challenge in a much bigger way in the United States, and his boss, Donald Trump, is the man who is mainly responsible for that"
Greg Abbott and his billionaire mega-donors know private school vouchers are unpopular in Texas.

Ronald Reagan: “Our peaceful trading partners are not our enemies; they are our allies.
We should beware of the demagogues who are ready to declare a trade war against our friends—weakening our economy, our national security, and the entire free world—all while cynically waving the American flag.”
