While it’s fun to banter about polygamy, or more accurately, polygyny, on this app, I don’t think a practice permitted in the sacred book of a fast-growing religion with over a billion followers can be abolished by any self-appointed cultural revolutionaries or pseudo-woke promoters of counterculture. We are going to argue about this with raised veins, but in the end, everyone is going to embrace the fact that morality is relative.

In the West, for instance, the right of members of the same sex to marry is being granted and is now fashionable, with the advocates citing that it’s the consent of two willing partners, as though polygamy is done without consent. The image of polygamy in the minds of some is an arrangement in which women are taken against their will and kept as sexually abused prey of an unchallengeable man.

What has always been intentionally underplayed in the discourse of polygamy is the place of consent in polygamy—and each partner can opt out if this doesn’t align with their preferences. This, I believe, is what consent means.

One other thing that doesn’t make the headline is that there are women who actually prefer polygamy to monogamy, and I’ve come across quite many of them. This makes you wonder where their human rights lie in this discourse of marital choices, which theirs aren’t recognised.

I grew up in a polygamous family, and I did not experience the nightmare some of you attribute to the practice. About two decades after my mum’s passing, her co-wife functions as my mum. That’s the polygamy I witnessed and respect. So, while I respect those who’ve elected to stay away from it or practise monogamy, I’ll always challenge the conspiracy to demonize a system that bred me.

For about 300 years, France partook in imposing its moral values and social norms on francophone Africa, yet failed in the policy to recreate the cultural identities of the natives. Today, polygamy is outlawed in France, but we have a polygamist as president of what’s supposed to be a client-state of France.

This relativity of moral and social values echoes what a believer is instructed in the Qur’an to say in such circumstances of defending their beliefs: “I will never worship what you worship,/ nor will you ever worship what I worship./ You have your way, and I have my Way.”
