You measured the wrong thing. You judged Peter Obi by how he talks. @PeterObi is not a traditional orator. That is not a secret, and it should not be the test.

Anambra judged him by what he delivered.

Youngest Chairman of Fidelity Bank. Chairman of the SEC. Governor who took the state from 26th to 1st in WAEC/NECO, left savings when others left debt, and won the Federal Ministry of Works award for best road network. He received recognition for outstanding contributions toward the MDGs during the period when states were evaluated for progress in health, education, poverty reduction, and infrastructure. Anambra voted him twice. They saw the books.

Nigeria has never lacked men who can talk politics. It has lacked men who can count, save, and deliver with integrity. When the incumbent Governor of Anambra State was seeking the governorship, he campaigned by heavily highlighting the governance record and achievements of @PeterObi — he strategically bypassed the record of the immediate predecessor whom he was contesting to succeed.

Style is not substance. Managerial competence is. Leadership is not defined by eloquent speeches or polished rhetoric — it is practiced through attitude, actions, and the alignment of words with behavior.

Ethnicity influences voting everywhere — not just Nigeria. That doesn’t erase competence.

Peter Obi’s support is not merely “Igbo presidency.” It’s driven by a clear, measurable record: Anambra under him was debt-free, invested heavily in education and healthcare, ran lean government, and left surplus. His private-sector discipline, personal frugality, and consistent anti-waste stance stand in sharp contrast to the culture of excess and patronage that has defined much of our politics.

In 2019 he was the running mate on an Atiku-led ticket. The dynamics, power, and accountability were completely different. Today he is the face of a different proposition — capacity, competence, character, and compassion — and that is why the enthusiasm is higher.

Yes, many still vote “our person.” That is the uncomfortable truth. But the larger failure is refusing to recognise when “our person” is also the most prepared person available. Pretending Obi’s appeal is only ethnic is itself a form of ethnic reductionism.

Nigeria’s problem is not that people want their own. It is that we keep elevating the wrong people and then act surprised when the results stay the same. In 2027 the real test is whether we can finally choose the best person — regardless of region — or whether we will keep recycling the same excuses.

Popularity without the traditional tools of power makes him a target. Competence that exposes mediocrity makes other politicians uncomfortable. Independent appeal makes him hard to manage.

Third, his message challenges the system. Talk of production over consumption, fiscal discipline, and reduced waste directly threatens the rent-seeking politics that sustains many careers. He has repeatedly stated that Northern Nigeria's vast uncultivated land is the country's greatest asset and can generate more revenue than crude oil. Competence and character become liabilities when the game is built on something else.
