1964年桑给巴尔（Zanzibar）革命期间阿拉伯人惨遭大屠杀的真实影像，也是世间仅存的现场实拍素材，由意大利摄制团队冒着生命危险记录留存。
桑给巴尔位于非洲东海岸，是由20多个岛屿组成的岛国，曾长期处于英国的殖民“保护”之下。这里从公元8世纪起就是东非重要的贸易港口，是非洲与阿拉伯及印度的贸易中心，因此岛上不仅生活着20多万非洲黑人，还有波斯人、南亚人，以及掌握着政权的阿拉伯人。在漫长的历史中，各民族不断融合，彼此间的界限也变得模糊。
但随着英国殖民者的到来，一切全都改变了。英国人为了统治需要，将各民族进行明确划分，并把桑给巴尔分成17个部落，每个部落只能保护自己的利益。食品和衣服也按种族划分，比如二战期间，亚洲人可以吃大米白糖、穿各种颜色的服装，非洲人就只能吃玉米和木薯、穿黑褐两色的衣服。同时，英国人还有意识地扶持阿拉伯少数民族继续掌权，桑给巴尔苏丹（Sultan）登基并宣誓向英国女王效忠，还引入选举制度进一步分化各族人民，这一切都为后来的大屠杀埋下了伏笔。
20世纪50年代，桑给巴尔的上层阿拉伯人也逐渐觉醒，他们意识到民族之间的仇恨非常危险，因此向英国殖民当局提出了解决民族问题的全套方案，包括赋予所有成人选举权、允许非官方人士参加立法会以及依法治国等条款，但是却遭到了英国人的否决。事实证明，阿拉伯人的担心是有道理的，随着党派之争愈演愈烈，各民族之间的仇恨也愈发难以缓解。
1964年1月12日，设拉子党（Shirazi Party）与群众党（Peoples Party）联合发动武装起义，推翻了苏丹王朝及民族党和奔奔人民党组成的联合政府，也就是桑给巴尔革命。革命政府成立后，种族分歧加上不平等的社会经济关系，让这些内心怀有强烈仇恨的黑人，对长期歧视他们的阿拉伯人采取了冷酷无情的屠杀。
意大利著名导演瓜尔蒂罗·雅科佩蒂（Gualtiero Jacopetti）正在坦噶尼喀（Tanganyika）拍摄纪录片，听到桑给巴尔爆发革命的消息，决心不能错过这个大好机会。但由于桑给巴尔岛已经被封锁，外界无法知道那里到底发生了什么，他们便决定租一架飞机亲眼看一看。与意大利人同行的还有3名德国记者，他们租用的是一架塞斯纳小型飞机（Cessna Light Aircraft），尽管他们收到了警告不准在机场降落，但是为了能拍到第一手资料，他们还是决定冒险试一试。
德国记者的飞机先行降落，就遭到了一群黑人的包围。意大利人在空中看到了这一切，却没有意识到即将到来的危险，也对准了跑道准备降落。当飞机降落在塞斯纳旁边准备停下的时候，一群黑人端着步枪冲了过来。幸运的是，他们的随缘枪法实在没什么准头，飞机加速起飞再次回到了天空。当意大利人在空中绕了一圈，回来寻找三名德国记者的时候，那架塞斯纳已经在烈火中燃烧了。摄制组没有任何办法，只好暂时抛弃他们的伙伴先行离开。
导演瓜尔蒂罗不甘心就这么放弃，所以在第二天，摄制组又租了一架直升机，再次来到了桑给巴尔。虽然这次仍遭到了枪击，但终于让他们拍到了震惊世界的一幕。在一个曼加人（Manga，农村阿拉伯裔群体）聚居的村落，茅屋已经被焚烧殆尽，尸体散布在各个角落。公路上，装满死尸的大卡车正在急速奔驰，他们的目的地是森林深处，那里已经挖好了巨大的万人坑。
革命爆发后，苏丹和政府里的其他阿拉伯人高官第一时间飞去了国外避难，而这些留下来的普通阿拉伯人，将为他们祖先犯下的罪孽付出生命的代价。150年前，他们的祖先让桑给巴尔变成了世界上最残酷的奴隶市场，贩卖黑奴的活动一直到1890年才被迫停止，黑人们要将他们的新账旧账一起清算了。这些裹着白色长袍的阿拉伯人，被集体赶进穆斯林墓地里，那里将是他们的最终归宿，无论男女老幼，谁也不能活着离开这里。
这大概是人类史上最残酷最可怜的场景之一了。幸存的阿拉伯人疯狂地涌向海边，想要求船离开这座岛，可偏偏赶上了退潮。等摄制组第二天再来的时候，沙滩上只剩下密密麻麻的尸体，让人看了头皮发麻。
纪录片拍摄期间，瓜尔蒂罗和他的摄制组也曾被捕，就在他们被押赴刑场准备枪决的时候，一名军官高喊着：“他们不是白人，是意大利人！”“不要杀了他们！”瓜尔蒂罗和摄制组因此侥幸逃生。
桑给巴尔革命爆发后，英美等国对此“深感担忧”，认为该国存在“赤化”风险，很有可能成为“非洲的古巴”。为此，英美等国决定绕过传统外交手段，试图通过干预战略，或者暗杀政府领导人来施加影响。虽然军事入侵和暗杀阴谋最终都未能实现，但是在英美两国的压力之下，最终促成了桑给巴尔与坦噶尼喀的合并，从而成功压制了革命政府，一个新的国家——坦桑尼亚（Tanzania）便由此成立了。
