And at the same time a mile down the street the entire lawn in front of Independence hall was filled with people watching a screening of national treasure… if you don’t live in Philly what are you doing
🧵 So I wrote the Wired story on the burnerverse, and as part of my reporting, I spent months reading and listening to the convos 20-something men have when they think no one is looking.
It's easy to dismiss the Cornell 7 as outliers, or super privileged frat bros, or byproducts of the Greek system. They're not.
It's also easy to say they're the worst-case scenario. That they represent the nadir of toxic masculinity, or a culture that teaches men from an early age that young women's bodies are disposable. But they don't.
That Snapchat thread? That's the norm. That's the baseline. That type of language is EXTREMELY consistent with the convos these guys are having when they think no one is paying attention. Because most of the time, no one is.
A WIRED analysis of DHS records identified dozens of specialized federal agents who used force against US civilians during the largest known deployment of its kind in US history. https://t.co/c5xonHJeDm
Like Trae said, we spoke to 37 former and current Anduril workers, in addition to investors, experts, and former military officials, for this deeply reported story, which you should read: https://t.co/krdLcxM7GY
Quote of the day from Wildcats OL Caleb Tiernan:
“A lot of people, when they hear Northwestern, they think of nerds, really dorky people… but there’s also a lot of chillers. There’s a lot of guys I’ve done group projects with, where I’m like, dude, you’re kinda like the GOAT.”
NEW: Pennsylvania’s largest newspaper is endorsing VOTE YES for PA Supreme Court in a scathing editorial on the danger of conservatives and billionaires seizing power over our court like they did in Washington
“The most important election facing Pennsylvania voters on Nov. 4 involves whether to retain state Supreme Court Justices Christine Donohue, Kevin Dougherty, and David Wecht”
“Voters need only look to Washington, D.C., to see the danger of a politicized, conservative majority on the bench”
“Essentially, Shapiro and the Supreme Court, which has a 5-2 Democratic majority, are the only bulwarks keeping Trump’s MAGA-fueled zealots from seizing total control of Pennsylvania.
If the GOP were to control the governor’s mansion and the high court, voting maps would get even more gerrymandered, voting rights, including mail-in balloting, would likely get curtailed, abortion rights would get dramatically rolled back, and pro-business groups — and polluters like gas drillers — would enjoy even less regulation. Funding for public education and transit would likely also be slashed.”
“Pennsylvanians should vote yes to retain the three Supreme Court justices.”
Thirty years ago, an Austrian theologian spoke to Peter Thiel about the theories of Carl Schmitt, the theorist tapped by the Nazis to justify Germany's slip from democracy to dictatorship. Those theories have been a roadmap for the billionaire ever since.

Big Tech's embrace of President Trump has left many of us wondering: What the hell happened to Silicon Valley? In our new politics issue, we're getting into it.

"War is here"
With no suspect in custody and no known motive, far-right influencers, right-wing podcasters, extremists, militia leaders, conspiracists, and GOP lawmakers all responded to the assassination of #CharlieKirk by blaming the left.

This city is a National Treasure. It’s a city of love, where eagles fly with a gritty spirit and cheese that spreads and cheese that steaks. Our road trip continues to Philly next. https://t.co/96XzLSFV8O
PLEASE take a moment to learn how government spending is reported. It's $8.2 million over 10 years, across all departments. Gonna be a long 4 years jesus christ
6ers arena supporters are funny because they dance in circles, they talk about how there’s no tailgating for Sixers games but then act like people will flock restaurants and attend Reading Terminal Market (closes at 6 PM) before games…
They act like the sports complex is a cancer to the city but then act like an arena strictly for a basketball team will save the city… they act like traffic in south Philly is so bad and cite how 85% of fans currently drive to games and then cite how the traffic won’t be an issue at an arena where they can’t have more than 40% drive to games or there will be gridlock traffic…
They talk about increased tax revenues but they’re not adding any tax revenues because they probably won’t get double the events in Philly especially by 2032 when you can assume with AI progression, concerts and things will be completely different by then and honestly will possibly be a thing of the past by then… so they’re just shifting Wells Fargo center tax revenue to 76 place tax revenue but there’s no increase without double bookings and I don’t see Philadelphia getting double bookings…
This arena conversation is annoying because the entire time most fans wanted to protect the sanctity of the sports complex and the unity of the 4 teams and the 6ers owners told us that’s not a possibility, that’s not reality which shows zero care for their fans who last time I checked are the people they’re catering the arena for, the stadium complex era is over unless Philadelphia city council has a spine which they don’t and there’s a lot of people are defending rival billionaires for a project that ultimately will not revitalize the city at all especially if the 6ers enter the much anticipated rebuild they will be in post-Embiid
Ironically the 6ers have a chance at winning the title this year but that’s all been lost in arena talk for an arena 7 years from now, they’re not even focused on their current era because they already sold out the current era and process and Hinkie to the league and cost this city a dynasty so they have to play face and act like they care about anything but their team value so Harris Blitzer can pass Kroneke in “team valuation” groups in a worthless billionaire pissing contest
Am I missing something? Why are people acting like south Philly is Timbuktu? (Btw in walking distance Fenway is 1hr from the commuter station and Wells Fargo is 1.5, but go off)
The best "experience" I ever had at a Flyers game in my life was at Fenway and frankly it is embarrassing just how hard Boston clears Philly when it comes to sports experience.
Every city in America understands that things are supposed to actually exist downtown except Philly.
