The British Army is the finest professional fighting force in the world and it operates within the law of armed conflict.

UK 30-year gilts: 5.869% - the highest since 1998.

Every basis point increase costs Britain roughly £300 million annually on its £3 trillion debt. Today's move alone added approximately £1.8 billion to Britain's annual borrowing costs.

This is the fiscal situation and what's Andy Burnham's response? Commit more public money to Ukraine. Discuss conscription. Talk about war with Russia.

A country borrowing at 5.25%, the same rate as during the worst financial crisis in living memory, cannot simultaneously rearm, rebuild, fund social services, and fight someone else's war.

The bond market is not ideological. It doesn't care about speeches. It prices reality.

And right now it is pricing Britain's fiscal position as the worst it has been in 17 years.
