390 villagers built this.
Locally fired clay brick. Stone foundations. Eucalyptus bark. Regional grasses shading the steel roof frames.
A library, classrooms, sports courts, gardens, and an outdoor theatre, all in one campus.
During the pandemic it became a food distribution and public health hub.
This is what local materials in the right hands look like. Not poverty. Not compromise. Resilience.

📌The @RwandaGov has unveiled a revised national urban development policy aimed at modernising housing, addressing the shortage of affordable homes, and guiding urban growth in line with Vision 2025.
📌The plan aims to increase the proportion of citizens living in urban areas from 27.9% in 2022 to 52% by 2035 and 70% by 2050.
📌The policy also targets the improvement of existing informal settlements and the creation of safe, economically vibrant, and environmentally friendly cities.
#Rwanda 🇷🇼
The Government of Rwanda has been upgrading informal settlements as part of Kigali’s urban renewal program.
This is Mpazi Rehousing Model Village, located in Gitega Sector, Nyarugenge District, where 793 housing units were built to accommodate families who were previously homeless or relocated from high-risk zones.
Clay-fired bricks were used as locally available materials to reduce construction costs and promote sustainability.
Rwanda 🇷🇼
President Paul Kagame has turned one of the last slums in Rwanda’s capital city of Kigali into a model real estate. These houses were given to homeless Rwandans or the ones who lived in the most high risk zones
The aim is to eradicate slums in Rwanda.
#Rwanda plans to establish a model eco-park for clay products in Rwamagana District, as part of efforts to promote sustainable construction and reduce reliance on imported building materials, according to officials. https://t.co/X3I8tBkqYH

📌Construction of some 104 affordable housing units is underway in Gahanga Sector of @KicukiroDistr under a project called Aheza Urban Village. The development is part of ongoing efforts to tackle growing housing demand in the @CityofKigali .
📌The construction started in April and is expected to be completed before the end of 2026, depending on the readiness of buyers. The cost of the units ranges from $23,000 (approx. Rwf32.5 million) for the most affordable units to $180,000 (approx. Rwf254.5 million) for the high-end options.
📌The project adds to the 90 units already completed in the housing project called Umutuzo Village, located in Kagasa Cell, the same sector. All the units in the first phase were sold out. The second phase comprises 104 new houses, with half of them already purchased.
📌Rwandans are actively participating in the purchase of the homes, with more than 60 percent of buyers being Rwandan nationals. This aligns with the government’s broader vision of increasing access to decent housing.
