What is most important about the absolutely horrific attack in Northern Ireland is, first, the victim and his family and, second, that the attacker was completely insane.

No normal African or Sudanese person thinks that beheading people is acceptable.

There is a legitimate question about how the attacker was granted refugee status in 2023. And he ought to be now deported, without question.

But the biggest and more difficult challenge, which politicians and commentators are predictably avoiding, is the extreme mental disorder of people who commit such heinous crimes.

We need to have a robust policy response about how to properly detect, monitor and detain people with dangerous mental disorders that are a threat to public safety.

But loads of politicians or journalists can’t be bothered to properly investigate, because it’s not politically fashionable, they’re addicted to social media and/or the systems in place for those with dangerous disorders are complex to understand
