The abhorrent practice of employing humans for manual scavenging is one that should plague us. Their stories never leave you... @samuel_sindhiya & I visited Manikandan who has been working as a manual scavenger for a decade. His is a devastating tale: https://t.co/fvMbiCUjKq
1) When I entered prostitution, I had no idea of the toll it would take on my mental health and my life. Therefore, I am vehemently against supporting any claims in favor of the industry.
I was young, vulnerable, and in dire need of money. At a very young age, I wasn't capable of making life-altering decisions, yet I thought I was , but I was very wrong.
I was painted a picture of a glamorous lifestyle with substantial earnings, all while being told it's the world's oldest profession. A lie I would hear countless times after I entered that lifestyle.
Coming to terms with the fact that I was selling myself was excruciatingly difficult. Enduring paid rape required a great level of self-deception. I tried to convince myself that it was just work, a means to earn money, and my choice. As a victim of sexual abuse. rape and violence, I even convinced myself that it was a way to regain control over my body and my sexuality. to get paid for it and an actual upgrade. It was naive and desperate try from my side to justify doing it even more.
I had to tell myself these lies to survive and to stay sane. My self-esteem was non-existent, and I had been told I was "bad," a bitch etc so I believed it. I was an outcast, and in that context, prostitution didn't seem like such a stretch (although it was)
Initially, the money gave me a semblance of value, a tangible one, I thought well if these men are willing to pay for me I am definitely worth something, since I had no sense of self-worth instilled in me to begin with, therefore I needed the tangible "proof" of it. That has changed dramatically. Over time, I felt increasingly worthless instead, and I was convinced that I was only good for one thing.
After many years in this lifestyle, I can only say that prostitution ruined my life, my mental and physical health, and even took away my beauty.
I can not say anything positive about it, and I can't comprehend how anyone could speak positively of it. Money can't erase the pain, the violation, and the mental trauma, it won't take away the fact that you let that men sexually violate you and although your entire being was screaming to leave that place, you silenced that voices in your head becouse you got paid for it. Even when what you really wanted to do was run far, far away from that men, and that places where they sexually abused you.( Not to mention the numerous dangers inherent in the industry, beyond the obvious) Anyone who glorifies prostitution is deceptive and heartless!
True empowerment doesn't align with what society often promotes. Allowing someone to have sex with you when you don't want to or feel pressured into it is indeed a loss of control and agency over your own body and choices.
Maintaining control and agency involves being able to freely consent or decline sexual activities based on your own desires and boundaries. It involves denying random individuals sexual access to you, learning to say 'no' when you're not comfortable or ready, when you don't feel like it and even refusing someone access to you in general when you're being disrespected. Setting and maintaining boundaries is what real empowerment and regaining control truly entail.
I firmly believe that this is why sex work can not be claimed consensual. Since there was no one time that I truly wanted to be there, and there was no one moment where I didn't wanted to stop it from happening but I felt compelled to stay there becouse of the money. There is no way to say that sex is consensual when i is a "duty" for one person and pleasure to the other. The power dynamic in relation between buyers and sellers where buyers hold the power (the money) over financially desperate individuals is never equal and entails coersion. I can say that with 1000 % certaintity, there is no one person in prostitution who doesn't feel exactly the same. After meeting many other women in prostitution I think I am justified claiming that.
#sexwork ? #prostitution #abuse
We remember Ayya Immanuel Sekaran today on his death anniversary. Today I have two messages ,one for the casteist people of the state ,"We will not obey you " .
Two, for some of the Dalits who say Christians are not scheduled castes - " One of the most powerful acts of rebellion against caste in Tamilnadu, post independence came from Immanuel Sekaranar and his mentor Peter Elumalai . Who both were Dalit Christians .We will not obey you either " .
"I am nobody's slave and I don't enslave anyone"- Babasaheb.
We could of course call ourselves the Alliance for Betterment, Harmony And Responsible Advancement for Tomorrow (BHARAT).
Then perhaps the ruling party might stop this fatuous game of changing names.
A young lady full of life has just passed away . She wished me a happy birthday last Friday night and said she was tired . Today she is no more .A good soul she was . Maybe we are too lazy or in our comfort zones to ask back " would you like to meet for Coffee and talk about your stuff?". We have to keep tabs on our friends. Check up on them. Instead of writing long obituaries.
Rest in peace Thangam.
