$OBD Obducat quietly becoming one of the more interesting deep-tech plays in Europe.
While everyone watches flashy AI/connectivity names like Sivers, Obducat is building the manufacturing layer behind next-gen photonics, sensors and nano-structured devices.
Difference: Sivers sells the story. Obducat sells the tools.
If Nanoimprint Lithography finally reaches real industrial scale, this could become far bigger than most people expect.
Tiny company. Huge risk. But also one of the few listed pure-play NIL bets on the market.
I just initiated a small, long-term position in a new deep-tech case: Obducat ( $OBDU ).
1. The Role in the AI Race (The Equipment Maker)
To scale Co-Packaged Optics (CPO) for AI datacenters, the industry needs to manufacture nanoscale optical structures (waveguides, lenses) in massive volumes. Traditional semiconductor lithography is often too expensive or physically limited for these specific 3D photonic patterns.
Obducat pioneers NIL (Nanoimprint Lithography). Instead of using light to etch patterns, NIL physically "stamps" nanometer-precision structures directly onto the material. It is high-throughput, cost-effective, and tailor-made for mass-producing photonics. They provide the factory-floor physics.
2. The Catalyst & The Upside (Why Now?)
Obducat historically sold these NIL machines (lumpy, unpredictable revenue). But they just announced a massive business model shift: They signed a 3-year Foundry Service Agreement worth a minimum of SEK 115M for Defense Photonics (a near 4x increase from the previous contract).
They aren't just selling the machine anymore; they are printing the components for the customer. This transforms them into a recurring-revenue manufacturing bottleneck for the optical supercycle.
3. The Risk (Full Transparency)
To be completely clear: I view $OBDU as a significantly higher-risk play than my other deep-tech holdings. It is a micro-cap with a history of extreme volatility and dilution.
Consequently, I have started with a very small, exploratory position. The risk is high, but if they successfully transition into a recurring-revenue Photonics Foundry, the upside from these valuation levels is extreme.
I am currently mapping their upstream/downstream partners. Does anyone in the deep-tech community track the NIL ecosystem closely? Let's dig in. 🤝
(Disclaimer: I hold a small long position in Obducat. I share my research, not financial advice. Micro-caps carry extreme risk. DYOR and invest in fundamentals.)

Obducat AB (€70Mio.) is a global pioneer and world leader in high-precision micro- and nanolithography.
At its core, the company develops and manufactures advanced machinery and industrial processes designed to structure surfaces at the nanoscale.
While traditional optical lithography faces physical and financial limits, Obducat’s patented Nanoimprint Lithography (NIL) technology solves these challenges. By using proprietary methods like IPS® (Intermediate Polymer Stamp) and STU® (Simultaneous Thermal and UV imprint), Obducat allows industries to stamp sub-10nm structures onto surfaces with absolute precision, making mass production both highly cost-efficient and scalable.
The massive growth potential of Obducat lies in its perfect alignment with global tech megatrends. Nanostructuring is the mandatory backbone for next-generation industries, including Augmented and Virtual Reality (AR/VR) lenses, biomedical sensors, automotive radar, and advanced 5G/6G infrastructure.
By acting as a full-suite provider, offering not just the heavy machinery but also the necessary consumables, resins, and process engineering, Obducat secures recurring, high-margin revenue streams.
This technological superiority is validated by an elite, tier-1 global customer base.
Iinstitutions like NASA rely on Obducat's solutions for aerospace and deep-space research. Semiconductor giants like Infineon Technologies deploy their tools for advanced automotive electronics, while Sumitomo Chemical utilizes the technology to manufacture high-performance optical films.
Backed by a rapidly growing footprint in the European defense sector and multi-million dollar long-term contracts, Obducat is uniquely positioned to capitalize on the global surge for semiconductor independence and next-gen consumer optics.
