For decades, African countries paid Europe roughly $500 million annually simply to lease satellite capacity for phone calls, television broadcasts, and internet access often even for communications within Africa itself. Calls involving the continent were among the most expensive in the world, with the money flowing directly to European providers.

In 1992, 45 African nations established RASCOM to create their own satellite and break free from this arrangement. They approached the World Bank, IMF, United States, and Europe for funding, but for fourteen years they received only vague promises and no real support. The reason was clear: the major powers had little interest in helping Africa stop paying them $500 million every year.

Gaddafi stepped in and ended the delay. He contributed $300 million from Libya, with the African Development Bank adding $50 million and the West African Development Bank providing $27 million. On December 26, 2007, Africa launched its first communications satellite, finally cutting the $500 million yearly payment to Europe.

He then set his sights even higher. As African Union chairman in 2009, Gaddafi advocated for a gold-backed pan-African currency the gold dinar to liberate African trade from the US dollar and offer countries stuck in France’s CFA franc system a genuine alternative.

Libya held around 143 tonnes of gold to support this initiative. He had also provided the bulk of the funding needed to establish three institutions aimed at replacing the IMF’s influence on the continent: an African Central Bank, an African Monetary Fund, and an African Investment Bank. The goal was for Africa to finance its own development.

In 2011, NATO bombed Libya, and Gaddafi was killed by rebels. Many Africans believe the push for an independent currency was the true reason for his downfall, citing leaked Hillary Clinton emails that referenced his gold reserves and pan-African plans. While this specific motive has never been conclusively proven and relies on a single adviser’s memo, the sequence of events is striking.

A leader who amassed gold to free Africa from the dollar and the CFA franc saw his country destroyed by the world’s most powerful militaries, leaving behind a failed state and open-air slave markets where a functioning nation once stood.

I have a theory, Rusheni mawe if you must, But I know I’m not alone in thinking this,

If someone is truly in hiding ,afraid for their life, wouldn’t instinct compel them to at least send a message to family? Even just a one-liner, a missed call, something to stop the torment of those worried sick about them? You don’t just disappear in fear, get a clean shave or maybe not so clean,and reappear in silence. That’s not fear, that’s a script.

Another theory: The Judiciary, feeling the weight of public outrage, pressures the DCI to account for Ndiangui. But instead of presenting him, the DCI plays the long game. Let the tension build. Let Kenyans cry. Then at the right moment, reintroduce him with a carefully planted narrative,”He was just in hiding.” Why? Because if they can convince you this was never an abduction, they dilute the power of protest. The next time someone goes missing, the streets will be quieter. People will hesitate to demand justice. And in that silence, the state can make more people disappear,unbothered, unchecked.
And the public will fear posting because,…what if he’s just in hiding, this might backfire one day me..

Or maybe it’s something even darker.
What if money changed hands? What if someone was bought to play along …say you were never abducted, give you a job, load your account, and let government bloggers spread the gospel of “fake abduction”?

And just like that, public trust dies. The cries for justice become whispers. We forget. We move on. And the machinery that silences truth keeps grinding.

A new Bill introduced in the National Assembly by Kilifi North MP Owen Baya seeks to amend the Crops Act to differentiate miraa from muguka and ultimately delist muguka from the list of scheduled crops, a move that could strip the stimulant of its legal protections, regulatory oversight, and access to government subsidies.

The proposal, if passed, would expose over 65,000 farmers, mainly in Embu County, to economic uncertainty by allowing counties to regulate or ban muguka without national government interference.

Muguka, scientifically known as 'Catha edulis' is widely consumed for its stimulating effects but has faced growing opposition, particularly from coastal counties like Mombasa, Kilifi and Taita Taveta, citing health and social concerns.

Delisting the crop would remove it from the framework that ensures quality, research, and market support under national law, potentially collapsing a Ksh 22 billion industry and costing counties like Mombasa, which reportedly collects Ksh 1 million daily from muguka levies.
