Highlights from rapid risk assessment of #hantavirus cluster linked to MV Hondius:
🔸 The public health risk has been reassessed with the most current information available, and the global risk remains low.

🔸 The risk for passengers and crew who were onboard the cruise ship remains moderate, as individuals exposed prior to the implementation of control measures may still develop illness during the incubation period and should therefore be closely monitored.

🔸 While additional cases may still occur among passengers and crew members exposed before containment measures were implemented, the risk of onward transmission is expected to be reduced following disembarkation and the implementation of control measures.

This landmark achievement was made possible by unwavering commitment of governments 💪🏾, tireless efforts of health workers 👩🏾‍⚕️👨🏾‍⚕️, support of partners and the communities themselves.

12 years on, the Region continues to sustain this hard-won gain, maintaining and expanding surveillance for poliovirus, and high vaccination coverage, to ensure every child is protected against polio.

India is leading the world in child survival, as highlighted in the UN IGME 2025 Report. Since 1990, Neonatal Mortality Rate dropped from 57 to 17 and Under-5 Mortality Rate from 127 to 27, reflecting remarkable progress.

This achievement is driven by SNCUs, JSY, JSSK, Mission Indradhanush, and digital tools like eVIN and UWIN, ensuring efficient vaccine delivery, better health monitoring, and stronger healthcare systems.

With Ayushman Arogya Mandirs providing comprehensive primary care at the community level, India is paving the way to eliminate preventable child deaths and secure healthier futures for every child.

📢 WHO South-East Asia Region congratulates the Government of #India 🇮🇳 on the national launch of the HPV vaccination campaign.

Dr Catharina Boehme, Officer-in-Charge, WHO South-East Asia, said, “This landmark step, led at the highest level of government, reflects India’s strong commitment to protecting adolescent girls from cervical cancer.

India’s introduction of HPV vaccination at national scale will have far-reaching impact — accelerating progress not only for the country, but for the Region and the world. Despite being preventable, cervical cancer continues to claim the life of a woman every two minutes globally, and the WHO South-East Asia Region bears nearly one-quarter of the global burden.

With today’s milestone, nine of the ten countries in the Region now include HPV vaccination in their national immunization programmes — a powerful testament to growing regional momentum toward eliminating cervical cancer as a public health problem.

WHO remains committed to support Member States achieve high and equitable coverage of vaccination, and to strengthen screening and treatment services in line with the global 90–70–90 targets for 2030 — vaccinating 90% of girls by age 15, screening 70% of women by ages 35 and 45, and ensuring 90% of women with pre-cancer and invasive cancer receive appropriate treatment.”
