So many queer and trans people right now are finding their old mental health systems insufficient because, well, a lot of treatment for anxiety and depression are based on the notion that your anxiety and depression aren’t rational. What do you do, then, with “don’t say gay” /1
@two_stdev A Drosophila researcher told me that too, in my third year. Then he made some truly ludicrous suggestions for how to collect intertidal data.
The President & Dem leaders can no longer get away with familiar tactics of “committees” and “studies” to avoid tackling our crises head-on anymore:
- Restrain judicial review
- Open clinics on federal lands
- Court expansion
- Expand Fed access/awareness of pill abortions
- etc
Are you paralyzed about what to do RIGHT NOW to support trans kids in Texas??
LIVE THREAD OF WHERE TO DONATE THAT AREN'T MAINSTREAM ORGS THAT ARE GONNA GET HUGE DONATION BUMPS RIGHT NOW.

🧵Today I’ll share the story of how @ChiPubSchools has been displaying different sets of COVID data to intentionally deceive parents & the public about COVID in schools. I’ll share evidence about how and (shockingly) WHEN they started fudging the numbers. Strap in. 1/
@MeUndies Thanks. I know that thread is a mess, so here are my recommended wordings:

So I took a @MeUndies marketing survey and saw this. I'm not even singling MeUndies out, because everyone is incompetent at asking gender/orientation questions in surveys. So let's talk survey design! 1/
TLDR: ask gender, sexual orientation, and trans identity as separate questions.
Also, think about why you are asking these questions, because maybe those categories aren't that important for you.
Maybe you want to weight your sample to a reference population, in which case you probably need to roughly match your question to the census (annoying because their question is bad, but you're kinda SOL).
Except probably you should use the three I wrote because EVERYONE SUCKS AT THIS SO BAD. I went to a MAPOR keynote about this a couple yrs ago, and even the "good" examples were pretty abysmal.
Maybe your boss wants a demographics dashboard, even though you told them a convenience sample isn't representative of the underwear-buying population. But they pay you, so you ask the 3-qn version, make a pie chart in Tableau, and feel the familiar wave of ennui wash over you.
You're also surveying your customers, so you probably don't want to piss them off with insensitive wording. So you might want to provide more options even if you'll roll them together during analysis, just so people don't hate your survey.
Maybe you see LGBTQ+ people as a marketing segment (ding ding ding!), in which case you might just ask "Do you consider yourself to be LGBTQ+?" I think this is a viable option for @MeUndies .
