Sacropenic obesity sits at the intersection of two observations: an aging population and rises in the share of individuals with obesity or overweight. Can we, from routing scans, assess sarcopenia and then derive a measure to understand how that relates to CV outcomes of interest?
In short, yes and yes. A surrogate of sarcopenic obesity can be assessed from cardiac MRI scans. And we can develop a sarcopenic obesity index and understand how it can better stratify and identify patients at risk for adverse CV outcomes including HF.
Of course, one immediate application is perhaps in the GLP-1 space where weight loss is accompanied by muscle loss.
