I have written many, many articles about the problem of “Long Covid” being badly defined. But that’s not your article’s problem. Different subsets of LC have different challenges. But the pieces completely misses all the interesting actual recent science, including as it relates to the subset that’s helped by versions of “brain retraining” and the problem there isn’t bad definition.
The issue with your article is that, as often is the case in medical history, lack of understanding has led to a subset of MDs and experts passing off terrible and outdated science as “advances” or “explanations”, and your article reads like a therapy session for them. This could’ve been solved by seeking out the scientific frontier from legitimate sources rather than experts whose feelings are hurt because scientific advances have shown them wrong. But they’re completely missing in your article!

🧵OF KEY CONCERNS
We've now read Alan Levinovitz's WIRED piece on Long Covid.
Our concern isn't that it discusses psychological theories.
Our concern is that it repeatedly conflates criticism of evidence with creating a "climate of fear".
Those are not the same thing. /1

🔗 Bio
As a clinical health psychologist, I notice that many people are using psychological defense mechanisms to downplay the risk of COVID.
These are my Top 7 examples:
🧵
"An estimated 10–20% of people infected with COVID-19 develop Long COVID, with cumulative global incidence approaching 400 million people..."
A stat from 2023 is still being bandied about in 2026.
Where are we now?
400M, 800M, 50M?
