An investigation into alleged electoral roll irregularities in Pilibhit Sadar, Uttar Pradesh, has flagged 10,470 voter entries approved without corresponding application forms or supporting records, The Indian Express reported on October 23.

According to the report, 13,779 Form 8 applications seeking changes to voter details were entered into the system between May 31 and August 29, 2026. Of these, 10,470 were approved and 3,309 rejected, but the corresponding forms and records were reportedly unavailable.

An FIR has been registered against two Sub Divisional Magistrates, Mayank Goswami and Hemant Chaudhary, and computer operator Anil Kumar over alleged irregularities. The two officials were removed from their posts and attached to the district headquarters, while the computer operator was dismissed.

The case has drawn attention because BJP candidate Sanjay Singh Gangwar won the Pilibhit Sadar Assembly seat in the 2022 Uttar Pradesh election by approximately 6,970 votes, fewer than the number of entries now under scrutiny.

The controversy follows complaints by opposition parties about alleged changes to voter details and discrepancies in Electoral Photo Identity Card numbers. The Election Commission has ordered scrutiny of the electoral rolls.

The investigation must establish whether electoral procedures were violated and whether the irregularities had any impact on the electoral process. The number of entries flagged does not, by itself, prove that fraudulent votes were cast or that the election result was affected.
