MEESHO PAID A STAGGERING $288 MILLION (₹2,461 CRORE) TO US GOVT
In May 2025, Meesho officially "came home, But to move their legal address from Delaware back to Bengaluru, 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐡𝐚𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐚𝐲 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐬𝐭 "𝐄𝐱𝐢𝐭 𝐓𝐚𝐱𝐞𝐬" 𝐢𝐧 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐩 𝐡𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲.
When Meesho joined Y Combinator (YC S16), they had to follow a non-negotiable rule: Register your parent company in Delaware, USA.
For years, Meesho existed in a "split personality" mode. This is how they—and many other Indian giants—operated:
The Brain (USA): A parent company called Meesho Inc. was registered in the US. This was a "Paper Company" with no office or trucks. Its only job? To hold the ownership (IP) and receive USD funding from global VCs who were more comfortable with US laws.
The Body (India): A 100% subsidiary called Meesho India Pvt Ltd. This is where the 10,000+ employees worked, where the app was built for "Bharat," and where every single saree and t-shirt was shipped.
The Result? Meesho was "American" on its birth certificate but 100% Indian in its soul. They leveraged Currency Arbitrage—raising in USD but spending in INR—and used Cloud/AI credits (up to $350k) that were easier to get as a US entity.

@Techstars It's so true, @Techstars . There's a lot of talent that gets missed when we only focus on who's already out there. I am glad Chris is talking about this.
@priymrj There’s a special kind of peace in these moments.
The grind makes sense.
The sacrifices feel worth it.
And the champagne hits different at 35,000 ft.
Safe travels, man — enjoy every second ✈️🥂
A founder showed me his bookkeeping process.
I didn’t know whether to cry or fix it.
40 hours/month.
3 bank accounts.
5 payment processors.
847 manual categorizations.
End-of-month “what is this charge?” detective work.
He wasn’t doing it wrong.
He was doing it manually.
If bookkeeping takes you >5 hours/month,
your system isn’t messy —
it’s broken.
