RESPECT RESILIENCE: THE INVISIBLE STRUGGLES WE CAN NOT SEE !
Every morning, I head out, either to practice with the Under-19 girls or to watch games while scouting players in the ongoing Nepal Premier League (NPL). These routines have given me an opportunity to interact with my driver, Umesh. Over time, we’ve grown comfortable talking about life, work & the challenges we both face.
Two nights ago, he graciously stayed back late for me as I had to meet a few leaders & players from different franchises in the NPL. It was well past midnight when we finally wrapped up, but not once did he complain or show any frustration. His patience & dedication amazed me, as always.
The next morning, during our drive, he opened up about his life in a way that was deeply moving. He told me he earns around 25 to 30 thousand Nepali rupees a month—just enough to get by. His voice was calm, but I could sense the weight behind his words. He shared that it had been two weeks since he last saw his son & daughter. His demanding schedule didn’t allow him the time & every rupee he earned went toward providing for his family.
Curious, I asked him, “How do you manage to cope with being away from your family for so long?” Umesh smiled & said, “You do the same, Sir. You spend so much time away from your family for your work & passion. But if you want a better example,” he added, “think about all the Nepalis who leave for the Middle East to work. They spend years in tough conditions, away from their loved ones, just to make life a little better for the people they care about.”
Then, he shared something deeply personal. “When I was six months old, my father left to work in Saudi Arabia. I didn’t see him again until I was ten years old. By the time he came back, I had grown up & felt like a stranger to me.”
His words stayed with me long after our conversation ended. Here was someone who had lived through the very reality he described—growing up without his father, yet understanding and appreciating the sacrifices his father made for the family’s survival.
Umesh’s resilience wasn’t just evident in his daily routine; it was embedded in his life story, shaped by separation & the unyielding determination to move forward despite the odds.
He not only showed remarkable resilience but also extraordinary tolerance. Despite his challenges, he works tirelessly, always showing up with a smile. That night when he waited so patiently reminded me of his quiet dedication and ability to endure life’s challenges with grace.
It made me wonder: What if you truly understood what each person you encounter is going through in their life? What if you could glimpse their untold stories and invisible struggles?
You’d see someone working tirelessly to save money and fulfill a promise they made to their mother—to build her a house where she can finally feel at peace.
“Lost a loved one.”
“Struggling with mental health.”
“Fighting cancer.”
“Facing financial hardship.”
“Worried about providing for my family.”
“Passionately pursuing a vision, sacrificing time with family.”
“Sweating hard every day to create a better future for loved ones.”
"Physically challenged yet dares to dream"
How much more patience, empathy, and understanding would we show if we truly knew what people are enduring?
Resilience often hides in silence. People carry on, battling struggles they don’t share with the world. This is where kindness becomes essential—not as a weakness, but as a deliberate act of strength.
It’s a conscious decision to offer grace, understanding, and care, even when it’s easier to judge or rush to conclusions. It takes strength to choose kindness because it requires us to rise above our immediate reactions & look beyond ourselves.
By choosing kindness, we honor the resilience of others & recognize their unseen battles. It doesn’t diminish our own struggles - it strengthens our shared humanity.
It’s a choice, a strength & a gift we can all offer freely.
