3 years ago this month our son Joel (then 17) bought himself a plane ticket to Des Moines because he had heard there was a guy making a killing out there cleaning windows. He asked this stranger if he could come stay a few weeks and learn the business from him and the guy said yes.
Joel came back and started his own window cleaning business. It took off so fast he left it in the hands of his younger brother Nate and moved to Montana to start another branch. They both started offering other services by just saying yes whenever someone asked if they did something else, until Nate hit the jackpot installing Christmas lights.
A little over a year ago, Joel (newly married) and Nate (newly engaged) met up in Utah to get trained on these new permeant outdoor LED lights they were seeing around. Soon that's all they were doing. But they both felt they could be doing it a lot better if they had a better product to work with.
So they sold their other businesses, joined forces, designed their own product, and started manufacturing the steel tracking for it themselves. This year their younger brother Sam moved to Montana to take over Joel's location while Joel and his wife moved to Hawaii to start a new location there.
This past weekend they hosted their first seminar for dealers to come learn how to sell and install their product. Now bluEmber Lights could be coming to your state too!
This is not a commercial for their company. They obviously don't need mom's help in marketing.
This is a pep talk for everyone who has lost faith in the next generation of young men. It's a pep talk for those young men themselves. And it's a pep talk for their moms.
Teenage boys are gifted with an extraordinary amount of energy, drive, stamina, competitiveness, ambition, risk-taking, courage, and optimism. That is their natural state and unfortunately our culture seems to do everything it can to kill all of it. What we tend to see instead is laziness, complacency, entitlement, uncertainty, fear, anger, and blame-shifting. Such a state is a demoralizing, paralyzing trap. But I think many could break free by the grace of God. Dads obviously play the most crucial role in this but moms are often the main decision makers regarding education and training.
To those moms I would just ask them to reexamine their sons' educational environment. Is it making or breaking him? No amount of learning will be of any use if the process has left your son weaker, less capable, anxious, bitter, and unmotivated. The problem is as women, we tend to look at an environment through the lens of our own wants and needs. What would be the making of us could have the opposite effect on our sons. It could be the breaking of them.
Today is Memorial Day. Many of those who have bravely fought and died to protect us and pave the way for young men like yours to provide in freedom, were the same age as this month's high school graduates. Our country is still full of that caliber of youthful bravery. Let's not burry it too.
A kid drew himself sleeping in bed between mom and dad and labeled it 'safe.'
In Japan, this exact sleeping arrangement has a name. They call it 'the river.' Mother is one bank. Father is the other. The child between them is the water. Roughly 70% of Japanese mothers sleep this way with their kids, sometimes through the teenage years. The Western model of putting a kid alone in their own bedroom is barely 200 years old. For most of human history, in most cultures still alive today, kids slept beside their parents.
James McKenna runs the Mother-Baby Behavioral Sleep Lab at Notre Dame. He spent decades watching what happens when parents and kids share a bed. The bodies sync up. Heart rates align with the parent's, breathing falls into the same rhythm, and by morning even sleep stages have started matching. The parent's body, in McKenna's words, acts as a kind of biological jumper cable for the child's.
In 2013, researchers in the Netherlands tracked 193 babies through the first year of life. They measured cortisol, the brain's main stress hormone. Babies who had spent more weeks co-sleeping in the first six months produced less cortisol under stress at 12 months. Sleeping near a parent had rewired the kid's stress system to be calmer under pressure.
Inside the kid's brain at night, the amygdala, the fear alarm, gets more sensitive as the body gets tired. Darkness makes it worse. A 2021 paper in PLoS One from Australian researchers showed that light directly suppresses amygdala activity. Lights off, alarm louder. The whole brain is wired to read 'alone in a dark room' as a threat.
Now add a parent's body to that bed. The kid's nervous system reads warm body, breathing nearby, familiar smell. The threat alarm dials down. Two parents on either side dial it down twice. The drawing is the kid's brain calculating maximum safety: I am surrounded by the people who keep me alive, and nothing can reach me without going through them first.
The arrangement in this drawing is what most of human history called 'sleeping.' Sleeping the kid alone in another room is a 200-year-old Western invention that we forgot was an invention. Every kid who has ever padded into your room at 3am and crawled into the middle of the bed is just trying to redraw the picture.
YOUR BONES ARE NOT SOLID. THEY ARE PIEZOELECTRIC CRYSTALS THAT GENERATE ELECTRICITY EVERY TIME YOU MOVE.
You were taught that your skeleton is a dead frame. Calcium scaffolding. A coat hanger for your muscles. That is the biggest lie in anatomy.
Your bones are alive. They contain more nerve endings than your skin. They produce every red blood cell in your body — 2 million per second. They store 99% of your calcium, 85% of your phosphorus, and 60% of your magnesium. Your skeleton is not structural support. It is a chemical factory and an electrical generator.
In 1957, Japanese orthopedic surgeon Dr. Iwao Yasuda discovered that when human bone is compressed or bent, it produces a measurable electrical voltage. He called it the piezoelectric effect. The same principle used in quartz watches, microphones, and sonar technology. Your bones are literally crystals that convert mechanical stress into electricity.
This is not metaphor. This is physics.
When you walk, every step generates an electrical charge through your bones. That charge signals your osteoblasts — bone-building cells — to deposit new mineral exactly where the stress occurred. This is why astronauts lose 1-2% of their bone density per month in space. No gravity. No compression. No piezoelectric signal. No rebuilding.
Dr. Robert O. Becker proved in the 1960s that this electrical signal is what controls all bone healing. He applied micro-currents to non-healing fractures and watched bones regenerate that doctors had given up on. His work led to the FDA-approved bone growth stimulators used in hospitals today — devices that apply specific electrical frequencies to accelerate bone repair by up to 300%.
But here is what they never connected for you: if your bones generate electricity from movement, and that electricity controls bone density, then a sedentary population is not just unfit. It is electrically dead. The skeleton stops generating its own repair signal. Osteoporosis is not a calcium deficiency. It is a voltage deficiency.
They told you to take calcium pills. They should have told you that your bones are batteries that only charge when you move.
Every step you take is not just exercise. It is electricity. Your skeleton is a living, breathing, self-charging crystal matrix that was designed to carry current from the ground through your entire body.
You are not a machine that runs on food. You are a bioelectric system that runs on frequency, voltage, and movement. And they made sure you sat still.
