I am deeply proud to work alongside these Latino leaders, who are working to deliver for the American people and improve the lives of working families across the U.S. #HispanicHeritageMonth
@egonz15 So much of my job as an immigration attorney furthers really unjust and racist systems and I think I - and our whole practice -- really need to grapple with our complicity in racism and xenophobia even as we zealously represent our clients
@egonz15 Think of the clients I've encouraged to report crimes to help their cases. Or declarations where I have clients discuss police corruption in their home country compared to the US. Or when I've said they have to show remorse for arrests when they were victims of racial profiling.
@JennieTetreault We need to keep children safe but that doesn’t mean we separate kids from non-parent family members (as is routinely done). Also, Carrizo is unlicensed. ORR had years to increase licensed facilities but hasn’t. If ORR must detain kids, at least send them to licensed shelters.
Yes, this! There are so many steps the Biden administration could take to reduce the need for emergency facilities. Many of my child-clients have been unnecessarily separated from non-parent relatives. Let’s release family units together not create more UCs.
Policarpo Chaj, K’iche Court interpreter at @LASuperiorCourt has passed away due to COVID-19. There are no words to describe the tragedy of yet another loss of an LASC employee. 1/3
@ReichlinMelnick Interesting. I'm not sure. Other than the client being a UC, it fits the bill of the case flow system, but maybe they've decided to just informally issue similar orders to UCs? I'm going to argue that the scheduling order shouldn't apply to my client because she's a UC.
@ReichlinMelnick I'm not sure I understand the difference or how to tell? The child has appeared in court before pro se and this would be her first appearance with counsel. And interestingly, it's out of the UC docket on the Van Nuys Immigration Court in Los Angeles.
@ReichlinMelnick And I just got my first scheduling order today - and for an unaccompanied child no less. So I guess I will get a chance to file that motion now. Sigh.
@ReichlinMelnick It's so ridiculous. I contest service of the NTA and removability in the majority of my cases. And I refuse to even discuss relief until the court has decided those issues.
@silvananaguib It's just outrageous! My teenage client, her newborn and I were forced to go in person to immigration court after the judge denied our motion to let the client appear telephonic ally. Do you know who was not in the courtroom with us? The judge, who appeared via video.
