Dan Lawrence has been building something.

In 2024 county season, he made 617 runs at 47.4 average. Decent numbers. Then 2025 arrived & he pushed it to 922 runs at 54.23, strike rate touching nearly 80. Nods turned into conversations.
This season,conversations should probably be louder.

679 runs already. Average 75.44, Strike rate also 75. And here is the small detail that separates form from something more serious. He has converted all 4 of his half centuries into hundreds.

Yesterday he scored 218 runs off 190 balls. The number itself is striking but context is more striking. His last 6 Surrey teammates combined for 36 runs. Only one more batter crossed 40. Lawrence was essentially batting in a different match to everyone else on his own side, which is either a statement about his form or a quiet indictment of what was happening at the other end. Probably both.

And this was two days after he walked out in Vitality Blast on 5th June & made 94* off 47 deliveries. Rest of his team? Only One score above 7.

People who watched a young Lawrence used a certain kind of language about him. Special, Different. Sort of player who makes the game look unhurried when everyone else is scrambling. That talk tends to fade when runs do not come consistently enough, when promise sits there unfullfilled for a season or two, gathering dust.
It is not gathering dust anymore. Lawrence is 28 & he is finally, fully, becoming the player those people always thought they saw. Turns out they were not wrong. They were just a little early.
