When Keir Starmer was elected I was relieved that finally after 14 years or Conservative chaos and decline we finally had a more sensible, better grounded PM
There are a lot of Labour policies I don't like, mismanaging WFA cuts, disability cuts, IHT on farms, VAT on private schools, cutting care workers, and with each one of these policies, Labour drives a wedge in society, all imposed on us for some imaginary fiscal rules and Brexit red lines which literally are the blockers to our economic growth
I don't like these policies, but fine, criticise them and carry on
But in the past few days, Starmer has not just once, but twice, used a phase which echoes of Enoch Powell: island of strangers
And this really bothers me
A lot of Labour supporters say that's an overreaction, that's not what he meant, yet even veteran Labour grandee Alf Dubs has criticised him
There are many problems in society that we need to address, but pandering to the far right is not the way to do it. What Starmer should be doing is making the care for immigration, explaining how it should be better balanced, how migrants add value to our society - as he did in his 2020 speech
I don't know who is advising Labour and Starmer, but this is a proper wrong turn and frankly I'm disgusted
And if you're a white person reading this and you're thinking this is an overreaction, ask yourself why every brown/black/other migrant or child of migrant friend that you know is just as upset as me, and then check your privilege
Starmer is meant to be uniting us, not dividing us, and honestly, I'm at the point where his willingness to stoop to this level of populist appeasement puts him in the same category of Boris Johnson, willing to say anything, to appease anyone, to get votes, instead of standing up on what he knows to be better and right
The only one risking us becoming an island of strangers is the Prime Minister who uses divisive language, shame on Labour for chosing this path
Five years since we left the EU and not one tangible benefit to have come from it.
Most telling of all is how it has diminished our ability to generate wealth and thus provide for our defence and public services in challenging times. Far from getting rid of red tape there were 41 million customs declarations to be made for trade between the U.K. and EU in 2023. Not surprisingly over 16,000 SMEs have given up exporting to Europe and our goods exports are rising at the paltry rate of 0.3% per annum compared to the OECD average of of 4.3%. Margaret Thatcher helped create the Single Market in goods and services because she could see clearly the boost it could give to our economy and it bore fruit. Until reality dawns for our politicians we are back to the 1960s-constant failing initiatives to boost growth, stagflation and impoverishment. We deserve better and it is within our power to get better. But that means abandoning the politics of fantasy.

Patients, staff and visitors have paid more than £1 billion in hospital car parking fees in the past six years, with some NHS trusts making up to £9 million a year from the charges, reveals @oliver_wright https://t.co/LMkauhurKp
Six NHS hospital trusts find themselves on Santa’s naughty list today, after failing to pay doctors the backpay they're owed.

Immigration is not the reason that you can’t get a hospital appointment, it’s the reason you can get one.
Please repost for all the people who can’t seem to grasp that.
@mrjamesob How could you have ‘hung out to dry’ with 60 properties and a yatch?! The absolute madness of it all. If these are the kind of people the Labour budget pissed off then 👏👏👏👏
Very few people realise that the vast majority of hospice and palliative care is provided by charity - not by the NHS.
I think this is a national scandal.
Please RT if you do too 🙏
Kamala Harris: He refuses to release his medical records. He is unwilling to do a 60 Minutes interview. He is unwilling to meet for a second debate. Why does his staff want him to hide away? Are they afraid that people will see he is too weak and unstable to lead America?
A new @TheIFS report puts the dilemma simply: if the government wants lower immigration into #socialcare, it will have to accept either lower staffing levels (and lower quality care) or higher spending to boost pay (more on pay a little further on)

Witnessing all the violent racist attacks in England in utter disbelief & horror
I was born & raised in England & have been a doctor in the NHS for over 15 years
I’m British.
Yet, for the first time, I feel I don’t belong in my own country and fear for my own & my kids’ safety due to the colour of our skin 😞
Lost for words.
When these morons show up in A&E after getting their head smashed in by the police, they’ll expect the same nurses to treat them.
They should be locked up and excluded from society. Not worthy of medical care.
