Across Pakistan-held Jammu and Kashmir, resentment toward the Pakistani state has intensified in recent years. Local political groups and grassroots movements like the Joint Awami Action Committee are demanding democratic rights, greater transparency and accountability, and a meaningful voice in governance.

Pakistani authorities have responded with sweeping security crackdowns, including bans imposed under anti-terrorism laws, mass arrests and the use of live ammunition against protesters, resulting in heavy casualties. Human rights organizations have documented excessive and indiscriminate use of force.
