Public health folks when people panic at the Ebola scare in NYC & increasing H5N1 transmission, but are totally indifferent to cuts to health agencies and USAID:
Even 23 years later, I still remember the calm blue sky over New York City on the morning of September 11, 2001. I had just cast my vote in the day's primary elections, and was thinking about what the future might hold when suddenly everything changed.
I'll always remember the peace that was shattered and the losses we endured that day. And I'll never forget the bravery and strength I saw in the city, and across the country, as people came together to care for each other in a dark and uncertain moment, and stood in unity to rebuild in the aftermath.
I hope you'll join @Sept11Memorial in remembering September 11th by taking a picture of the sky above you today, and sharing it with #RemembertheSky and #NeverForget911. You can also visit https://t.co/0yDooB5QL7 to learn more about sharing this important history with new generations.
🆕 our new commentary "The worsening mpox outbreak in Africa: a call to action" in @TheLancetInfDis with @OutbreakJake , Inger Damon, Daniel Mukadi-Bamuleka, @PlacideMbala & @Dimostic
With more than 18,000 suspected #mpox cases & over 600 deaths reported in 2024, coupled with cross-border spread of a new variant, immediate action is essential.
Key priorities include:
1. Scaling up #testing & #surveillance
2. Addressing research gaps (e.g. natural history, transmission dynamics, and risk factors for mpox)
3. Investment in #vaccines & #therapeutics
4. Enhancing high-quality supportive care
5. Developing tailored community outreach for prevention & control

In light of second dairy worker H5N1 infection, I am re-upping our piece (w/ @sauer929@BhadeliaMD ) calling for enhanced dairy worker protections. We should not wait for a full blown catastrophe to take actions to protect workers from this persistent occupational hazard.
"Our failure to protect them threatens their health and gives the virus an opportunity to evolve into a greater threat to people, including those who live far from dairy farms," @JenniferNuzzo, @sauer929 and @BhadeliaMD write. https://t.co/ahxCQHbcYx
