Hot take: Traditional sauna will be one of the biggest wellness movements of the next 15+ years. I hesitate to even call it a “trend.” It’s evergreen. A thousand-year ritual that somehow skipped American culture. I bet on sauna becoming a true American subculture, approaching the cultural weight it has in Finland.
Running clubs were the early signal. People are sick of bars and restaurants. They want community without the hangover. Sauna gives people a way to gather and feel better, not worse.
@myles_snider a few spots you'd appreciate:
burger - Maillards on Noriega or Causwells on Chestnut
pasta - try for a bar seat at Cotogna
quick sandwich - Cheese Plus
coffee - The Coffee Movement
rooftop vibe - Lolinda (an SF must)
turns out cold plunging after strength training reduces muscle growth by up to 40%.
meanwhile sauna after training increases growth hormone by 200-300%.
the cold plunge industry is a $4 billion fad...meanwhile the sauna has 5,000 years of evidence behind it.
sauna > cold plunge
Shocking new MRI study on 3–5 year olds: Just 2 hours of interactive screen time per day is linked to measurable loss of white matter in the brain.
Professor Mike Nagel (University of the Sunshine Coast):
“White matter is myelin — it insulates axons like plastic on a wire. Deficits in myelin early in life mean deficits in neural connectivity.”
The more screen time, the greater the white matter loss — especially in areas tied to language development and literacy.
Nagel’s first reaction (as a researcher and father):
“Wow… I was not anticipating seeing anything like that. It hadn’t occurred to me that something as little as two hours a day was having such a profound effect.”
Parents: Has this changed how you think about screen time limits for young kids — or do you think the risks are overstated?
4) Sauna blankets.
Saunas are one of the best health tools on the planet. Sauna blankes are not.
It's literally wrapping yourself in heated plastic and calling it wellness.
You don't need a study for this one. You just need common sense.
Sauna buys you time.

The productivity effects of NOT touching your phone in the morning cannot be understated.
Sleep resets your dopamine system. Scrolling first thing instantly fries it with cheap hits and puts you in an uphill battle to regain focus and motivation for the rest of the day.
The morning should be your time for intense focus on your most important work.
Resist the urge to mess with your phone upon waking and this work will become substantially more engaging/productive.
I don’t know of a single other tool that reduces all-cause mortality as powerfully as SAUNA use. 4 sessions/week = 40% lower risk of death from any cause.
Backed up by a 20 year Finnish study. (JAMA 2015).
Been experimenting with pre-sauna drinks lately. Still dialing it in.
Tonight’s mix: RO water, trace mineral drops, 265 MGO manuka honey, whole peeled tangerine. Shaken.
