A thread 🧵on anthology poetry teaching:
(My context is a SEND school w. strong GCSE results)
We do 1 poetry lesson a week, starting at start of Year 10.
A poem typically takes 2 lessons (2x40 mins) to initial read & understand.
16 poems (Edexcel IGCSE Lit):
(1/20)
New to Edexcel English Literature iGCSE here - any advice on the best sequence to teach Paper 1 Section B, the poetry anthology? I would love to hear what more seasoned teachers have taught first! #TeamEnglish#EnglishLiterature#Edexcel
It was a pleasure to experience truly fantastic CPD today with Dr Shelley Moore @tweetsomemoore . Totally engaging and thought-provoking, succinct and practical. Thank you for your invaluable perspectives on inclusion. A lot to reflect upon and and begin implementing!

A small booklet that offers a retrieval or an encoding exercise each day for the next 3 weeks. I'll be creating one for after Feb half term too. Link below ⬇️

How to write about the sky: a thread.
The beginning of my students' stories often focus on describing the weather as part of setting. Invariably, they are very clichéd. 1/n
Does anyone have any thoughts on changing GCSE English exam boards from AQA to Edexcel? My faculty is considering it and I am pretty unfamiliar with the pros and cons comparatively. Thanks! @Team_English1@TheEnglishNetw1@English_Dropbox@mr_englishteach @FunkyPedagogy
@stalkedbyfate @HoDandHeart @Team_English1@TheEnglishNetw1@English_Dropbox@mr_englishteach @FunkyPedagogy This is interesting, thank you for your concise response! I’m relatively new to AQA but I’ve been impressed with how many resources are available, so I hope your transition runs smoothly.
@MissLEnglish21@Team_English1 I call them “examiner lessons” and if you have a class that enjoys paired/ group discussion they tend to engage well. Comparing and ranking responses means that pretty much all students recognise the richer writing, and are challenged to think why.
@MissLEnglish21@Team_English1 Using examiners reports has worked well with my classes. Learners independently respond to a question. Look at 2 (unannotated) responses, discuss markscheme, decide mark. Check AQA’s annotations and marks. Give learners a different question to apply their new understanding.
Okay, time for our next thread in the ‘Power and Conflict’ series. This time, we’ll be looking at Ted Hughes’ ‘Bayonet Charge’ 🐇🪖
In particular, I want to think about ‘Bayonet Charge’ as a poem that threatens to collapse in on itself, as well as the symbolism of the hare.

@duckworth_ms Hi, this looks amazing! As a new teacher to IB English, I would love to have access to this resource!
Unfortunately Dropbox says it’s deleted. Is there any way you could help me with this please? I would appreciate it so much!
