There has been programs for this — CFCAS then CCAR — for ~two decades because otherwise the research wouldn’t have support from other programs. Why stop now?

There are a few reports that examine the funding landscape, e.g., NSERC’s CCAR assessment & an E4D report on climate science funding. Short version is that the govt ended the funding stream that could support PEARL and similar research.

@EC_Kosters @KirstyDuncanMP @environmentca PEARL is a useful way to trace govt support for atmospheric & climate science. In the early 2000s, there was an injection of funding through CFCAS that enabled it to launch. This was ended by Harper govt, downscaled to CCAR. Now CCAR gone... along with lots of research capacity.

@EC_Kosters @KirstyDuncanMP Originally the facility was built & operated by @environmentca (1990s). Budget cuts led to it be left unused in early 2000s. University group took it over and re-launched as PEARL mid-2000s but funding sources have been steadily eroded over the last ~ten years.
