• 363,019 Indian students were in the U.S. in 2024-25
• 143,740 were working on OPT
• Nearly 40% were no longer studying, but working
• Indian enrollment grew 10% in one year
• Indian participation in OPT surged 47%
• Indians represented 48% of all STEM OPT workers in 2024

OPT was created as “optional practical training.”

Today, it functions as a major employment pathway, allowing foreign graduates to work in the U.S. for up to three years without entering the H-1B lottery.

That is why Indian students would bear the largest share of the impact.
